Creating a virtual machine

Hi, I wanted to ask you what it takes to create the virtual machine to choose the type of operating system?For example, if I choose to install linux but when choosing the type insert windows, I noticed that linux installs me the same .... so I do not understand the reason to choose the type during the creation.
