(not sure if I ran sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade recently) but ...
Since today my vmware stoped working!
I can launch the GUI, but as soon as I try to start a VM, I get the following error:
The systemd service seems to have a problem:

Tracing it a little further, it proves to be a problem with the kernel modules vmmon and vmnet, as you can see it in the following cmd line output (line 42 and line 47).

Trying to add it again gives me:
bastij@basti-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe vmmon modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vmmon': Exec format error
And re-inserting it gives me:
bastij@basti-laptop:~$ sudo insmod /lib/modules/4.4.0-116-generic/misc/vmmon.ko insmod: ERROR: could not insert module /lib/modules/4.4.0-116-generic/misc/vmmon.ko: Invalid module format
But the files are there and freshly built:
bastij@basti-laptop:~$ sudo ls -lah /lib/modules/4.4.0-116-generic/misc/vm*.ko -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 115K Mär 7 19:08 /lib/modules/4.4.0-116-generic/misc/vmmon.ko -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 82K Mär 7 19:08 /lib/modules/4.4.0-116-generic/misc/vmnet.ko
What else can I do?
Google gave me some answers on "modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vmmon': Exec format error" and "insmod: ERROR: could not insert module /lib/modules/4.4.0-116-generic/misc/vmmon.ko: Invalid module format", but no solution.
Thanks
