Kernel Modules for Kernel Version 3.12 (and why do we need to patch these manually, anyway?)

Hello everyone,

I have been trying repeatedly and without success to patch VMware Workstation 9.0.2 for kernel version 3.12.  I have tried manually applying patches via the method described here, using patches gathered from assorted locations.  I have also tried running the script outlined here on a fresh 9.0.2 install, again, with no success.  I am running Debian Jessie, kernel version 3.12-1.  I have patched kernel modules myself previously but am not having any success this time around.

I would also like very much to know why end users are expected to patch kernel modules themselves in the first place.  VMware Workstation is a paid product, yet I've had to do this several times, and to my knowledge there is no built-in means of automating it.  Why is VMware not providing a method of automatically updating the kernel modules built into the product?  It is equally frustrating that there appears to be no centralized location from which to acquire the necessary patches.  Having to download patches and scripts from all over the Internet to provide a standard feature (upgrades) for a paid product is ludicrous.  I would be absolutely ecstatic to be proven wrong though, so feel free to do so.
