Parent/Child startup problem

HELP!

Using Workstation 6.5.1.  running XP for some older applications that won't run on higher MS OS's, and apparently something went south when startup was interrupted (or I fiddled with some files I shouldn't have trying to recover disk space).

When I try to start Workstation now, I get the (attached) message where '...cannot open the disk ... Reason:The parent virtual disk has been modified since the child was created.'

Is there some way to work around this, or change the date of a file (.vmx?) or otherwise fix this?

Also, if I use some saved configuration files, the machine progresses thru startup, but before windows (XP) opens, I get a message '..a disk read error occured...' and prompts me to Ctrl+alt+del, which doesn't help.  Is this an easier problem to fix?

I have the '.vmdk' files saved, so is there some way to restore these and avoid the problem(s) above?

I can restore to a snapshot, but need some of the 'things' loaded since that was taken.

Thanks for any help you can give.
