Hello:
I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 and Workstation 10.0.3 with various Windows 7 guests. Using the default open-source video driver, I get poor local video performance but my host OS is stable. Trying to use the official NVidia closed-source driver, be it version 331, 340, or 343 beta will work fine until I run Workstation and launch a VM. After about 5 minutes of use, my hosts and guest OS lock up requiring a cold restart. All of the NVidia closed-source drivers behave in this way and all work fine with other applications until I run Workstation and launch a VM. I have tried toggling "Use 3D Acceleration" on and off and this does not effect the host OS crashing.
My question is this: Why would using the NVidia supported drivers in a supported version of Ubuntu be this unstable when Workstation is running a Guest OS? I can use the low-performance open-source drivers with no problems, but again, this is a low-performing video driver.
Does anyone else have this problem that has figured it out? It is very frustrating to get a near instant crash running a VM while using the NVidia drivers.
Thanks in advance,
Jim
