I am receiving the following error on one of my VMs....

VMWare Workstation Unrecoverable Error (vThread 17)

Exception xc0000005 (Access Violation) has occurred

I am able to disable 3D Acceleration on the Display Adapter and the exception disappears....however I prefer to enable 3D Accelaration...

I am running Worksattion 10.0.1 and the lastest nVidia Quadro 1000m graphics device driver

Does anyone know of a better workaround ?

Within the VM log I see the following in and around the time of exception...

VMWare WS 9: XP VM Does not release exclusive locks on Host files

I copied a directory hierarchy from host to guest via the "Shared Folders" feature. Once done, I closed explorer on the WinXP 32 bit guest, and attempted to delete the directory structure on the Win7 64bit host (rd /s/q dirname). I received multiple errors to the effect that "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Shutting down the VM allowed me to complete the cleanup, but I don't believe this should be necessary. Anyone else experience this? Is there a solution?

Thanks.

Error message from VMwar Tools install on Fedora 21 (Rawhide)

Here is the error message I received during installation of VMware on Fedora 21 kernel 3.14 . At least  one result is  I can't  drag and       drop.  May not be  able to use shared folders as well

" The vmxnet driver is no longer supported on kernels 3.3 and greater. Please upgrade to a newer virtual NIC. (e.g., vmxnet3 or e1000e)"

How can I attempt to fix this?

BTW there on kernel 3.3 on kernel.org  I don't believe Ffedora 20 evne has kernel 3.2 which  would satisfy the requirement her.

Unable to connect WebCam to Workstation 10

Running Workstation 10.0.1 build-1379776 on a HP 8570p laptop. Windows 8.1 x64 Host OS. It has a built in Chicony webcam which works fine in the host OS.

Workstation sees this as an available device, listing it as "Chicony HP HD Webcam [Fixed]". When I select "Connect (Disconnect from host)" absolutely nothing happens. I've tried this with Win7 x64 and Win8.1 x64 guests. Same result.

Is there some way to make this webcam available to the guest OS?

Running VMware Workstation 6.5 and Vista 32-bit with a wired NIC.  My Bridged networking stops working after Vista sleeps or hibernates. A restart is required to restore its operation. NAT networking works fine.

Anyone have any ideas how to restore it without a reboot?

Hello,

this is my first time using workstation 10.0.1.

I have tried to create new VM but I see the DVD is not starting to install Win7x64.

The DVD is ok because it works the autorun outside VMware.

When I run the VM :

1) I'm not able to enter the SETUP with F2

2) The DVD never start and I see the message on the second jpeg.

I have tried to select Legacy emulation but it seems the DVD never start to be read.

Do you have an idea which is my problem ?

Thanks

Can't drag & drop - VMware Workstation 8 (VMware Tools Installed)

Guys, I've been ignoring this for quite awhile but now it's very bothering. I am using the latest version of VMware Workstation 8, and I've recently copied all of my VMs off my external HD from a backup I did awhile back. The VMs load and everything appears fine; however, when I go to drag & drop between the host and the guest, I get the circle with the line drawn across the middle.

I've reinstalled VMware Tools and selected the "repair" option, but to no success. Also, I've double checked the VMware Settings for Guest Isolation, and it appears that "Enable drag and drop" is enabled, as well as the the other 2 checkboxes that's on that screen.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. This has become very frustrating lately.

Virtual machine freezes in VMware Workstation 10

I'm having an issue where 1 of my VM's is freezing constantly inside VMware. It's not always the same one and it doesn't seem to be related to the programs I'm running inside it.

I use the VM's to run a game called Aion (similar to WoW). The games run fine for about 1 - 2 hrs. Then suddenly one of the VM's will freeze and cause the other VM's to stop accepting input. I can't even ALT + TAB on my host machine. This happens with 1, 2, or 3 VM's running. I have my log file for the specific VM's that it happened to just recently. Earlier I checked in the other log as well and they both have shown this:

shared 5429 4915 breaks 537568 537442 inits 528737 pool 20 overflow 956

I've tried researching it a bit but I couldn't find anything on it really. Here are my system specs as well:

465GB Seagate ST3500630AS ATA Device (SATA)

Is there something that I need to do differently to keep this form happening? If you need more information please let me know.

VMWare Workstation on a VM

$

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a new laptop for a business I'm starting, and I was thinking of a mac. However, most of my software is windows based. No problem, I already use VMWare Workstation as half of it is also not supported on anything except XP SP1. My only concern with a mac is that while I can have all my VM's set up, I can't run VMWare Workstation on OSX, so if I ever needed to change anything in the VM settings, I'd have to have access to a PC with VMWare workstation.

Unless, I thought, I use a PC to initially set up a VM running windows XP/7/8 for the sole purpose of running VMWare Workstation. Then I run this VM using Fusion, make my changes, save the VM to the host machine, and then run them using Fusion.

So aside from feeling very much like this guy:

26hg.jpg

Can anyone tell me if this is actually possible? Or whether it would have inherent issues that I haven't thought of? Having not used Fusion I don't know how much access to VM settings I would have compared to Workstation, maybe Fusion would in itself be enough. The only things I'm going to need to be playing with are virtual serial ports and network connections. Anyhow any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

VMWare Workstation 10 always fails to start Guest VMs with: VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) vcpu-0:VMM fault 13: src=MONITOR rip=0xfffffffffc2c89bd regs=0xfffffffffc008e60

After almost every MS Windows Update (Windows 7 x64 Ultimate)  VMware Workstation 10 (build-1379776)  is unable to start any Guest VMs,  and reports the Error:

VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0)

vcpu-0:VMM fault 13: src=MONITOR rip=0xfffffffffc2c89bd regs=0xfffffffffc008e60

Sometimes doing a System restore to the previous state will fix the issue,   and re-applying the MS Windows update doesn't cause the issue.

But this time,  it's just not working.....

I'm looking for any help debugging this issue..

I've attached the vmware.log and core files from one instance of where this occurs,  but the logs look similar:

FILE: FileCreateDirectoryRetry: Non-retriable error encountered (C:\ProgramData\VMware): Cannot create a file when that file already exists (183)

FILE: FileDeletionRetry: Non-retriable error encountered (D:\Downloads\hadooptutorial_v1\hadoop-virtual-machine\hadoop-vm-appliance-0-18-0\hadoop-vm-appliance-0-18-0\hadoop-appliance-0.18.0.vmx~): The system cannot find the file specified (2)

seem to be the visible errors,  but, I'm at a loss.....

Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated.

John

P.S.   Yes,  I've uninstall and re-installed VMWare Workstation several times to try and fix this...

VMware Tools Stuck Downloading After Upgrade to VMware Workstation 10

I upgraded from VMware Workstation 8 on Windows 7 to VMware Worksation 10 on Windows 7. The first guest I started up successfully upgraded VMware Tools with no problem. The next one (a Windows Server 2008 R2 image) is stuck downloading the tools, or so it says. On bootup it offered me the upgrade tools option at the bottom of the window, and when I selected that, it said "VMware Tools installation cannot be started until the current download finishes." If I go to the VMware menu, it says "Downloading VMware Tools" where it should say Upgrade VMware Tools. I've rebooted the guest a couple times. I deleted the virtual floppy in case it was related to that old problem with virtual floppies, but no help. This image doesn't always have internet access, but I gave it internet access, and that didn't help. Anybody else seen this? Any suggestions?

And then i get a black screen.  My host OS is a windows 7 ultimate service pack 1 and 64-bit operating system. I already have installed fedora operating system but havent installed it as a virtual machine. I installed it as a separate OS. So if anyone could chalk out the problem i am facing?

home lab issue: multiple network adapters in Workstation VM

$

Hey, all. I wanted to play around with multiple vSwitches and network adapters in my home lab setup, which is VMware Workstation 10 + eval copy of vSphere 5.5. I created a new VM in Workstation with 4 Ethernet adapters, and installed ESXi into it. Workstation clearly shows 4 NICs, all GigE with different MAC addresses. But ESXi is only picking up one. I logged into ESXi Shell and ran dmesg, and its seeing the first NIC as "e1000" and the rest as AMD during bootup. The "esxcli network nic list" command only showed the first NIC.

I checked the vmx file and only the first NIC had the hardware type specified, i.e.

ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"

so I copied that directive to the other NIC entries. ESXi now sees all 4 NICs.

Hope this helps.

Upgrade from Workstation 8.0 to Workstation 10.0

Hello,

When I buy an upgrade license for upgrading from version 8.0 to version 10.0, will I need:

  • to re-install version 8.0 then before installing version 10?
  • or can I simply enter the version 10 key in my current trial version of version 10.0?

P.S. While de-installing version 8.0 before installing version 10.0, I did not remove the license info from the registry.

Thanks in advance

Using virtualization to run windows 7 forever

$

Certain features of vmware virtualization such as non-persistent storage and independent guest date make it possible to run windows 7 forever, using the trial period before activation.

It seems possible to do even better than that, and allow dates to go beyond the one month trial. By convincing windows it has just been installed. Has anyone got this to work?

What happens with windows updates, is there anyway to make them think they are always in the trial period?

Is there some other way to make windows 7 ultimate run forever in a VM? Haven't tried activating windows in the VM because the license by Dell here is for the host only. What happens if I activate windows in the VM? Does the host lose its activation and fail to reboot?

VMware Worksation and 802.1X

My company is trying to figure out a solution for VMs running on local desktops with NAC configured on the network. Apparently when VMs use bridged mode for their network connectivity it will break the host's connection. We don't want to allow users to use NAT mode as this makes them invisible to the external network which creates a security risk. Has anyone had to work around this? Ideas?
