NVMe disk/vmdk: Slower than iSCSI! Where is the claimed performance gain?

$

Hi guys,

I'm currently in my trail period of v14 before I pay for the upgrade from v12.5.

Most important feature is the performance gain of such a disk as by the VMware Workstation 14 Pro Release Notes

My first tests although are quite disappointing!

Preface

My host is Windows 7 x64 on a Dell Precision 7510 with 8 Core Xeon, 64GB RAM, two NVMe m.2 drives (Samsung 960 Pro & SM951).

I've installed the latest Samsung NVMe driver on the host and everything else is up to date as well.

All guests are up to date and all NVMe disks are shown correctly in the device manager (under the VMWare NVMe Controller).

All my test runs are done with a complete idle host and guest and are repeated a couple of times to ensure consistency.

My first test was done wit the VM on the "old" SM951 NVMe.

The VM/guest is a newly installed Windows Server 2016 with full VMWare tools installation.

I created 4 disks/vmdk with 60GB each:

171210 on old (comparison).png

The performance inside the guest isn't the same as on the host - not even close!

But whats more troubling is, that the SCSI-vmdk outperforms the new NVMe!!

I did another test with the VM/guest on the brand new 960Pro.

The VM is a Windows 7 with just one vmdk as a NVMe:

171210 on 960pro (comparison).png

Here the "loss" is even worse!

It even seems there there is a "cap" in the maximum performance on a NVMe-vmdk, doesn't matter how fast the physical NVMe is.

Does anyone have suggestions for reasons to this test results?

Can/Should I approach VMWare directly with this issue?

Thanks heaps!

Soko

Hey there

so I have this error now

I look online

and I see that I need to enable something in the "services.msc"

I did it and the keep's poping up

Restarting whatever I do doesnt work

How about the bios ? maybe this is the problem so I saw an option called vt-d and I enabled it

and it keeps doing it

How about the reinstalling it so I installed a software called revo uninstall vmware + all the registry keys

and guess what doesnt work :/ Tried restarting

I even tried to repair vmware via the installer-menu (when you delete it you get this option to repair)

maybe it check's the documents for "Virtual machines" so I rename it with the old vms (that but the way wasn't even attached to vmware since I  resinstalled everything)

even went to delete .lck files and yeah it didnt worked well it did the same thing even tried the delete .vmem files and it did not helped (the snapshot's one I kepth) (Anyways doesnt matter because I tried to create a new Virtual Machine)

What could it be ? I dont think its my machine because it did worked but for some reason it just does not work any more !

kind of disappointing to see all of this comments that say's that they got their problem solved while I get the same error :/

Thank you for reading it, I would be super happy if any of you can help me I am having a super hard time with this :/

Thanks in advance even to whoever read it and helped to whoever is seeking help online

Workstation pro 15 reclaim unused space

Hi Everyone,

Host PC - Windows 10

My vm - RHEL7

My host pc is running out of space so decided to delete unwanted stuffs in the vm. though i deleted significant amount of files. host space remains same. to reclaim the space i have to fill with 0s in vm drive.

I found out running this command will do the work.

cat /dev/zero > /zero.fill;sync;sleep 1;sync;rm -f /zero.fill

My question is, will this command affect my vm's snapshots? any other consequences ?

Thank You

Grab mouse input when cursor enters VM window

Hi!

I'am using the VMware® Workstation 15 Pro in Win 10 1809. The guest Os is Ubuntu 18.04.2

When the mouse enters the VM I have to first click for it to be captured. This means each time the VM looses focus, I have to click at least twice to do a simple task.
The mouse release however is working as expected.

I already checked the option under Edit -> Preference -> Input (Automatically grab & ungrab the mouse).

VMware tools are also installed.

Fullscreen/Widow Modes don't make any difference. (I'am using a 2 monitor setup)

Is there a fix for this? Virtual-Box can do this without any problem!

PS:

I saw there was another 1 year old thread with the same issue. But unfortunately it is unanswered: Re: Grab mouse input when cursor enters VM window

Hello,

I'm building a nested lab with Workstation 10, I have 3 ESXi hosts build and an iSCSI SAN (Openfiler) and now I want to add a router and I see some use Freesco.  I've downloaded it add 3 network cards, but when I boot it up it says it can't find the network cards.  If Googled this and can't find much and their sites not the best, any ideas or can you recommend another router?

Thanks

Hello! I am a college student studying with a vmware work station. Recently, I did Windows 1903Upgrade and Mainboard BIOS Upload. However, a blue screen occurs on the host computer during guest add in vmware. All guest additions take place without considering the iso type. I tried to solve the problem through Googleing. But it didn't. You need your help.

VMware WS 2019 Tech Preview?

Anybody have any information on a possible VMware WS Tech Preview for 2019 or for that matter anything about VMware WS 16?   I think it would have to be at least somewhat compatible with Hyper-V to be interesting.   As many of you know VirtualBox 6 is at least somewhat compatibile with Hyper-V although I haven't tested it (but might since I've gotten VMware WS 15.1 working under Linux (Ubuntu 19.10).

Workstation VLAN tags

I have a workstation that has 2 NICs and Vmware Workstation 11 installed.  I would like to have multiple VMs running on different VLANs at the same time.  I know with ESXi I can add different VLAN tags on different switches, but how can I do this on Workstation?  Is it even possible to do this?  The switchport that the second NIC is patched to is a trunk with the VLANs I need tagged.

Thanks in advance.

Guest Freeze on RS232 Communication

I installed the latest Win 10 Feature Upgrade (Build 18362.175) on my Host. Running a Win 7 Guest on latest version of Workstation 12 Pro. Since the Win 10 update my Win 7 Guests freeze whenever I try to do any RS232 serial communications. This applies to both on-board ports and USB-To-Serial adapters and happens every time. Kind of important in my work.

The Serial adapter used is Aten UC-232A. Every Guest i try same crash happens. Co-workers are experiencing the same problem. I have tryed to install the latest version og Workstation 15 Pro (on trail) to see if any updates would solve the problem, but without any fix.

Configure virtual network settings using command line

$

Hi Folks:

I manage computer labs that host VMware Workstation Pro at school and configure the virtual network using the vnetlib.exe program (as documented in the VMware communities and by sanbarrow) so all the computers have identical settings. Unfortunately, there are two settings that I can't seem to figure out how to modify via command line, registry, or configuration file that would fully automate the process. Here are the two settings causing problems:

1. Disable DHCP service on VMnet1--This is performed manually by launching the Virtual Network Editor, selecting the VMnet1 (Host-Only) network, and unchecking the option Use local DHCP service to distribute IP address to VMs.

2. Specify a network adapter for the VMnet0 bridged network--This is performed manually by launching the Virtual Network Editor, selecting the VMnet0 (Bridged) network, and choosing the physical network adapter in the Bridged to drop down list. We also install Nmap on our workstations which adds the virtual npcap loopback adapter (also used for Wireshark) to the bridged to list. When the Bridged to drop down list is set to Automatic, half the computers select the npcap loopback adapter instead of the physical network work adapter.

I would like to know if there is a way to configure these settings by 1) using vnetlib, exe program, 2) modifying the registry, or 3) changing the contents of a configuration file. Your input is appreciated. Thanks!

Have a GREAT DAY!!

VMware Workstation 15.1 running on OpenSUSE Leap 15

Why am I having so many problems getting and installing VMware Tools lately?

I tell it to install vmware tools I get a dialog saying it needs root permissions, I

put in the password. A dialog comes up saying it is Downloading and then it errors

out with:

There was a problem updating a software component. Try again later and if the

problem persists contact VMware support or your system administrator. As I am

the system administrator, I am posting here for any tips before launching into paid

support. This is the second machine I have had this happen on in the last few weeks.

I have had to download and manually install the package which isn't ideal.

There is no local firewall running to block it. Our main firewall could block it but I am

not seeing any service denials there. Is this a current 'known issue' or is it just me?

VM hands - log shows: GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox-dnd timed out.

I have run out of ideas and have a serious problem

My VMWare workstation 12 Pro runs on a Windows 10 64 bit host.

Has been running without problems for years.

Recently, without any warning and in a totally random way it hands up for good.

As the attached vmware.log shows, the last entry there is:

2019-08-02T15:48:39.813-04:00| vmx| I125: GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox-dnd timed out.

2019-08-02T15:48:56.332-04:00| vmx| I125: GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox-dnd timed out.

When I try to re-install Tools, the process is started correctly:

2019-08-02T16:01:19.031-04:00| vmx| I125: TOOLS INSTALL entering BEGINNING state.

2019-08-02T16:01:19.031-04:00| vmx| I125: ToolsISO: open of C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player\isoimages_manifest.txt.sig failed: Could not find the file

...

but quickly stops with the same message

2019-08-02T16:01:19.056-04:00| vmx| I125: CDROM:  initial physical CDROM state is 1 (sense)

2019-08-02T16:02:19.062-04:00| vmx| I125: GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox-dnd timed out.

The VM can't be shut down or suspended. Even if the instance of VMWare Workstation / Player is killed,
some  of the related processes keep running and cannot be stopped. The only solution remaining is to reboot the host.

Could someone please HELP ?

Как или где изменять вот эти параметры ?

How or where to change these parameters ?

Если вписать вот эти параметры в vmx то ничего не меняется, частота процессора всегда примерно 2195 mhz.

If you enter these settings in the vmx, then nothing changes, the processor frequency is always approximately 2195 mhz.

sched.cpu.units = "mhz"

sched.cpu.min = "2200"

sched.cpu.max = "3100"

sched.cpu.shares = "3100"

sched.cpu.affinity = "all"

I am getting a message from Windows that it cannot apply an update because I am running Workstation Pro.  My CPU runs that just fine, but seems to be too old for 14 or later.  Do I have anything I can do to keep things working or do I have to abandon Workstation Pro until I can upgrade my system?

Upgrade from workstation pro version 10

I am running workstation pro version 10.0.7 on Win10 home 1803 with a vista guest and a XP guest.

I would like to upgrade to a more current version. What is the upgrade path to the most current version?

Will my existing guests need any kind of conversion?

What type of problems can I expect?

Is there any documentation available regarding converting from old versions?

Thanks
