Issue Upgrading Windows 7 Guest to Windows 10

$

Windows 7 is now unsupported, so I am trying to upgrade my Windows 7 guest to Windows 10 using Windows 10 ISO.

The problem is that the controller and video VMWare used in Windows 7 are being listed as not compatible in Windows 10 (message below) and I cannot proceed with the upgrade. This VM has been copied from a different computer and the current host running VMWare Workstation 15.5 (15.5.1 build-15018445) is a Windows 10 (64bit) desktop - underlying hardware is not an issue.

These devices aren't compatible in Windows 10. Contact the manufacturer for more info.

LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series, w/1020/1030

(LSI)

VMware SVGA 3D

(VMware, Inc.)

You'll have problems with your display in Windows 10.

How can I configure the guest to use Windows 10-compatible VMWare devices so I can perform this upgrade?

Thank you in advance for any information/links you may be able to provide.

Just wanted to say: Thank you, VMware doc team!

Just wanted to express my gratitude to VMware for the quality documentation.  I decided to get back into VMs after using Workstation 12 ages ago, but figured I'd try out Oracle's VirtualBox first, being a free opensource solution.  When I tried firing up a VM, it spat up some mysterious error with no information whatsoever about what had actually caused it to fail -- just that it had failed.  I spent a while fiddling on Google, thinking there was some error in my setup, before I finally gave up and decided to bite the bullet on the old VMware workhorse and upgrade to Workstation 15.

I fired up Workstation, and what do you know?  The VM wouldn't run because a BIOS configuration (Intel V-x, of course) was set to False.  I found this out right away because Workstation tossed up an error describing the exact nature of the problem and how to fix it.  It took me about 30 seconds on Google to figure out the steps I needed to take the solve the problem on my specific configuration, and about half an hour later here I am with my VM up and running.

Thank you to VMware and its doc team for providing quality documentation which immensely improves the QOL & user experience.  It might sound silly to say, but that error message with specific information was well worth the money I spent on the license as it saved me potential hours of headache.

Workstation Pro 15.5 causing screen flickers and monitor to go into power save mode

I have Workstation Pro 15.5 (15.5.1 build-15018445) installed on Windows 10 Pro, I am not even using the Workstation yet to build or install VMs but the installation alone causes my 2nd monitor to flicker/flash and then if I don't move the mouse monitor goes into power save mode. If I uninstall Workstation Pro 15.5 the issue goes away. I tried the VMware Player 15.5.1 and exact same behavior. I have created Windows 10 restore points prior to Workstation Pro 15.5 install. I also tried running a "repair" from add and remove programs on Workstation pro install without any success. There is some incompatibility.

VMWare Workstation & NAT & traceroute

Hi everybody!

I'm using

Host OS: Win 10

VMWare Workstation 15 Player

Guest OS: Ubuntu Server 18.04

Network: bridge

Everything works fine: ping yandex.ru, curl https://yandex.ru etc., except traceroute yandex.ru

In traceroute i see only first hop (host PC). Every other steps blanked with stars:

traceroute to yandex.ru (77.88.55.66), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

1 _gateway (192.168.150.2) 0.135 ms 0.081 ms 0.087 ms

2 * * *

3 * * *

....

I started Wireshark in host OS and have seen that host succesfully gets ICMP type=11 (ttl-exceeded). But it does not transmit them to Guest OS!

I stopped windows firewall but no success.

Please tell: is it normal for VMWare NAT to drop ICMP type=11? And how to fix this behavior?

Disable Hyper-V?

I have downloaded and installed VMWare Workstation 15.5 for a class in college where we will be utilizing virtualization quite a bit, but when I installed it and tried to run it, it came up with an error message saying that I had to disable Hyper-V. When I went to find it in my features and programs list, to disable to role, but Hyper-V isn't even there. I also noticed that when I opened up my system info previously, I had like 4 or 5 "Hyper-V" related things enabled, but when I go there now they have been replaced by something that says "a hypervisor has been detected, anything that requires Hyper-V will not be displayed". I don't know if that last part has anything to do with it, but I don't understand why it is telling me to disable Hyper-V when it isn't even on my computer anymore. I am running workstation pro 15.5 on Windows 10 Home. Please help.

Virtual Machine fails in Workstation

I have probably invested more that 40 hrs so far trying to get this working, but I am failing miserably and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong :-(  I have repeated the steps below multiple times, without success.

1. I converted my Lenovo Laptop, running Windows 10 Enterprise to a Virtual machine using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client.  Slow, but it generated the .vmdk file without any error messages ~ 335 GB)

2. I copied the .VMX and .VMDK files to my DELL laptop, running Windows 10.

3. I started VMWare Workstation 8 on my Dell laptop, pointed to the Virtual machine file(s) and when I try to power on the VM I get a blue screen and the error message,

"Your PC run into problem and it needs to restart.  I will restart it for you"

then followed by another blue screen,

Recovery

  Your PC couldn't start properly

A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed

  Error Code: 0x0000225

You'll need to use recovery tools

Any ideas?

BSOD on W10 Startup after Converting Physical Machine

$

Hey guys,

Trying to convert a dying laptop with W10 to a virtual machine so that the software can outlive it's aging hardware.  However, when I ran the VMWare converter tool, the resulting virtual file gives me a blue screen of death every time it launches. On the Recovery screen that shows afterwards, I'm told the computer couldn't start properly because "A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error Code 0xc0000225".

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong here? Preliminary research showed that perhaps my drive was an IDE when it should have been a SCSI, but that is not the case. It is currently a SCSI, as are the rest of the virtuals that I run, so it doesn't appear to be a driver issue.  I have seen very little else pertaining to this error code that has been helpful, so it would be great if anyone out there has seen this error.

If there is any other information you are curious about, please ask.

Thanks,

Colton

Access EFI Partition of a .vmdk in Ubuntu Linux

Hello I have a .vmdk file and I need to change the boot.efi from it. How can I. lint the EFI partition of that .vmdk so I can change the boot.efi?

Note: Vmware can mount to /mnt/ the .vmdk but I don’t see the EFI partition where is located the boot.efi, then how can I access to that EFI partition/directory?

For example if I give this command:

vmware-mount -p my.vmdk

It will show the two partitions perfect the EFI partition is visible but how can I access it? Because if I give the command:

vmware-mount my.vmdk /mnt

It mounts something but is not the EFI partition. How can I then mount that EFI partition there in the .vmdk file?

Thank you

How do I force VMware to boot from the host's CD-ROM?

$

I am running VMware Workstation 6.0.0 build-45731 on host Windows XP, service pack 2, with guest OS RedHat linux (RHEL 4).

I have been practicing my linux sys admin skills in this configuration for several months now without any problems.

Now I want to practice booting linux from (the host's) CD-ROM, in which

I have inserted an ISO image of RHEL 4. This is how one would begin the

process to recovery the linux environment should it not boot.

The problem I am having is that whenever I start the virtual machine

it boots linux from the virtual hard drive and I don't know how to force it

to boot from the CD.

How do I force (interrupt) VMware to boot from the CD?

Thanks in advance.

Identify Player or Pro Compliance

When our software asset management solution scans computers for installed software, we simply see "VMware Workstation 15" installed.  But nothing indicates if it is Player or Pro.  Does anyone know how we can distinguish between Player or Pro when we scan computers remotely?  Our goal is verify compliance between our entitlements and what is installed.

Thanks,

Ron

LAN Only Connection?

Hello, I have a VM that I use for work and I'd prefer to limit it's connection just to the LAN, however I want other computers to connect to it inside the LAN not just the host. Is this possible?

No compatibility network adapter found

Hello everyone,

I installed VMware 15 pro on my Dell  precision m4800) 32g and 256 hd two days ago. Everything was working fine. I created two datastores and three virtual machines.  I added a third datastore, but I later decided to delete it. After deleting the third datastore, I got an error messages and it also says "Warning HDCP lookup failed and no  compatibility network adapter found.' Since then, no ip address and I can't access it online. I have repair the VMware and even reinstall it and nothing is working.  I check youtube video and nothing helpful there. Please any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Adding an existing Workstation virtual machine to vCenter Server

$

I would like to know if it is possible to virtualize a hardware Windows PC in the following way for use with the ESXi server:

1) Use VMWare Converter to create a standalone virtual clone of the PC

2) Configure the clone using say VMWare Workstation, for example registering a new Microsoft product key for Windows

3) Then at a later time add the cloned virtual machine into the ESXi server

The reason I ask is that we have a case where an employee will move from a desktop to a new laptop and we want him to still have his old PC available for some sensitive work not compatible with a non-stationary computer.

Environment:

We have virtualized all of our servers into an ESX vCenter Server with two instances of the server.

In this environment we run about 10 servers, both Windows and Linux.

These were virtualized many years ago or added later directly inside ESXi.

This has been running for a long time now with no real problems.

We have as yet no virtualized desktops on the server.

I have recently successfully virtualized my own HP laptop (running Windows7) when I had to migrate to a newer laptop running Windows 10.

VMWare Converter did the job successfully to a standalone vm possible to use with Workstation PRO15 on the new laptop.

So I think that one way could be to virtualize externally and make sure the vm works before actually adding it into the vSphere server, provided that this path is possible.

It seems safer than doing the conversion on the mission critical vSphere Server.

What do we need to observe when doing the conversion this way?

- Target conversion level of the virtual machine? (The vCenter server is ESXi 5.5.0 206810)

- Changing the Microsoft product key

- Other issues

Thanks for any advice on this.

Difference between VMWare Workstation Player (Free vs Licensed version)

$

Hello guys,

I wonder, if there is some one pager to see, what additional benefits has enterprise (licensed) version of VMWare Player.

I have seen somewhere, that you have a possibility (in addition to free version) to run Encrypted machines/Machines created in Workstation Pro and have possibility to lock some settings for users.

WE are thinking about new concept for Virtual PC central management and because Horizon Flex is not a case anymore, I am thinking If I will be able to have some dedicated administrators with Workstation Pro and then end-users with just player (to run centrally provided machines created via Workstation Pro)

But I would like to see, really all the differences between Unlicensed and licensed Player

Thanks a lot for any hint

Cheers

VMWare Workstation with Ubuntu 19.10

Has anyone tested VMWare Workstation (any version) with Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan Ermine)?

Any issues we need to be aware of?

Are there issues with Windows 10 1909 with Workstation 15.5.0?

$

I have a number of VMs I use from time to time.  Silly me, I really need to learn to back them up prior to letting Microsoft update Windows 10.  Anyway, I was happily running on 1903 when MS pushed out 1909.  Now the VM is a slug, taking forever to boot with slow UI responses.  Yes, I know I could have reverted, but I missed my 7 day window.

Would an upgrade to 15.5.1 help me out?

I'll add another question - does VMWare post anywhere compatability tests or warnings?

Regards,

C. Gilley

Edit: removed the 1903 reference from the title
