Graphics problem after upgrade 15 to 16

I have several Windows 7 x86 guest machines, running on a Windows 10 x64 host with VMware Workstation 15. Today I decided to give VMware 16 a try. After installing VMware 16, virtual machines are totally unusable, severe graphic issues arise just after power on, all screen components and pixels begin to mess randomly. I hardly achieved to upgrade VMware tools on one of the machines through crazy random clicking on the screen, and after that the VM works perfectly. So is feels like VMware 16 is not compatible with VMware tools 15 Windows 7 graphic driver - but it seems I am the only one on the forum suffering this so it's obviously not that simple.

 

I have snapshots so I can go back to the previous state in order to perform any check you can recommend me.

Can't start ANY! virtual machine on VMWorkstation 16 after a few days of usage it (Windows 10)

I have a problem on Windows 10. Yesterday I just closed virtual machines on my notebook as usual (I use Workstation 16 for some time already)

and today no any virtual machine is able to start. It shows all the time spinning logo of VMWare bios. 

mksSandbox.log has old date and contents. Tail of vmware.log has new date/time and is below...

VMWARE tools fonts issue

Hi there,

I just installed windows 10 and I installed vmware tools.

 

Once Installed the vmware tools on start I could not see the texts.

I use VMWARE 16 on pop-os 20.04 LTS

This is the issue that is happening to me!

 

Can you help me solve this out?

Hyper-V or Device/Credential Guard problem

I applied the solution ways in the link but I couldn't succeed again. Who has a different opinion?

I made Hyper-V disable, again I encountered the same error.

 

Your host does not meet minimum requirements to run VMware Workstation with Hyper-V or Device/Credential Guard enabled. Refer to VMware KB article 76918 at https://kb.vmware.com/kb/76918 for more details.

hcmon driver error when installing VMware Workstation

Hello VMware community,

 

I'm having great deal of difficulty installing the latest version of VMware Workstation on my machine. During the installation process it removed the older version of VMware workstation, and then threw the hcmon driver error when installing the newer version. I tried running the setup multiple times and each time got the hcmon driver error.

 

I've searched the web of this error and did what other suggested but to no success. I'm throwing in the white towel trying to figure this out on my own and have come to this forum seeking help. Would someone be kind enough to review the attached install logs and help me determine what the issue is and how to resolve it? Much appreciated.

 

I've tried the following with no luck.

 

- Removed all instances of VMware Thick clients and VMRC from my machine.

- I ran the install file via powershell as admin.

- delete hcmon file from the windows\system32 directory.

- cleaned up all traces of VMware workstation from the install directory.

- Restarted the system.

- disabled AV

 

.. I'm at a lost here.

Workstation 16 Pro: Where is the REST API (vmrest.exe)

Hello together

 

 

Can anyone tell me where I can find the vmrest.exe? With WS 16 Pro there is no such file anywhere in the program folder.

 

 

According to Internet sources, it should be located under:

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware

 

 

but it has nothing like that.

Isolating vmnet9 and vmnet10

I would like to setup 2 custom vmnets that are not able to communicate with one another but can communicate outbound to the internet. I would like to do this without any extra VMs acting as routers on the vmnets. Here are my assumptions:

 

1. If I setup 2 custom vmnets like vmnet9 and vmnet10 configured with NAT, these 2 vmnets would not be able to communicate with each other.

2. The guests on vmnet9 and vmnet10 would be able to communicate with the host, even if the "Connect a host virtual adapter" option is unchecked.

 

Are these assumptions correct?

If I set up a new VM in Workstation Pro can all Windows 10 users access it?

So I'm trying to set up two VMs in Workstation Pro on my Windows 10 pc. I want all Windows 10 users to be able to access the first VM, and then I want to restrict the second VM to a single account, so that only that account can see and use that machine. Is there any way to do this? If so, how? Thanks in advance.

DX11 games acting very buggy on high end computer

Hello, I have a fresh installation of Workstation pro 16 on Fedora Workstation 32. I have an Nvidia 1080 TI gpu with the latest stable drivers from their website. My computer is AMD Ryzen 3950x with 128GB ram. 1TB nvme drive. I started up a fresh win10 vm and updated the os. The vm guest tools and dxdiag tool shows everything is good. I jumped into WoW on low settings. I dont get over 30ish fps, but it feels much less than that. its constantly sticking and jerking around. The mouse jumps all around too. Ive played with all the settings to no avail. Am I missing something?

Serious bug in Shared Folders feature in VmWare Workstation 8.x

Hi.

 

I see - there is a serious bug in that feature!

In particular scenario is following:

  • Enable Shared Folders feature for VM (let say = "D:\share" on host PC will be visible as "Z:\HostShare" on VM)
    (here you can suspend/resume VM couple of times)
  • On VM, using a shell script copy all *.h, *.c* files from "Z:\HostShare\sandbox\modules\core\myApp1\source" to "D:\sandbox\modules\core\myApp1\source"
    (here you can suspend/resume VM couple of times and then repeat the same copy-operation)
  • On host PC - open any of *.h, *.c* files which were copied on VM - edit it and try to save, Windows on host PC will report "file access error" - file is in-use and cannot be overwritten (or such)

 

Solution:

  • go to VM, open VM Settings, disable Shared Folders feature, click [OK], then enable Shared Folders feature back

 

As I can see this bug is exists in VmWare Workstation for quite a long time (more than 3 years).

Could you pleas fix it, finally?

 

The idea is - Shared Folders feature MUST NOT EXCLUSIVELY LOCK FILES which were accessed from VM. Especially when these files were closed/released on VM.

ML inside Workstation VMs

I'd like to do machine learning inside a Workstation VM.  Host is Windows 10 2004.  I grant there's a settings check-box to accelerate 3d graphics, but this isn't the GPU use I'm thinking of.  How do I enable my laptop's second GPU for use by a VM for non-GUI tasks?

Clipboard sharing won't work between Windows 10 Host and Guest.

Can anyone help me with the issue where I am not able to share clipboard between Windows 10 Pro (both Guest and Host) while using the same Host Machine, clipboard works fine on Windows 7 and 8. I’ve tried everything like:

  • Uninstall VMware Tools, Reboot, Install and Reboot.
  • Manually add entries to the VMX file for clipboard.
  • Tried VMware Workstation and Player both.
  • Created New VMs and imported the existing virtual HDD.
  • Updated VMware from v15.x to latest v16

 

Windows versions are same for Windows 10 both Host and Guest and all VMs are for testing purpose only. None of them is shared or deployed.

vctl first thoughts

The docs pointed me here to express my thoughts on vctl.  So here goes.  I've got VMware Workstation 16.0.0 and vctl 1.1.0 on a Windows 10 2004 host.

 

I've been eagerly awaiting Workstation 16's release because of this "run containers in Workstation" feature.  It's one of the main reasons I've chosen to purchase an upgrade.

 

The first thing I noticed is vctl is using the old Docker syntax.  For example, `docker container list` and `docker image rm` are much simpler to remember and teach than `docker ps` and `docker rmi`.  I grant vctl is only v1, but only supporting the old syntax makes it feel like Docker 1.13.  In theory it should be easy(ish) to shim the other cli arguments into calling the same underlying functions.

 

Supporting kind right out of the gate is brilliant.  But it makes me curious:  What's the DOCKER_HOST and DOCKER_CERT_PATH env vars I need to get regular docker.exe to run?  Knowing vctl merely proxies to containerd running in the VM it just started, I wonder if I could get more compatibility with existing tools by connecting directly.  (For comparison, run `minikube docker-env` and it rigs up regular docker.exe to minikube's docker-compatible pipe.)  With these values, I could also easily rig up VS Code Remoting into the VMware-hosted container runtime, and rig up a dozen other GUI and CLI tools, unleashing a whole new volume of opportunities.

 

`vctl kind` downloading kind.exe and kubectl.exe is brilliant.  But both are a version out of date.  Perhaps vctl kind could use the GitHub releases API to grab the latest version?  I'm also curious what would happen if I did download the latest and stick them earlier in my path.  Are these official releases?  Or are they VMware look-alikes?  Creating a fake docker.exe shortcut is completely cheating.  Because the command set is only sort-of compatible, and because the console output is formatted so differently, I'd rather this wasn't even an option.  (It's self-documented if I must also change my script from docker.exe to vctl.exe.)  All else being equal, I'd rather the real docker.exe could shim into place.  But barring this option, no docker.exe is better.

 

I ran `vmrun list`, grabbed the path into ~\.r\vms\kind-control-plane\ and was curious.  I went into VMware Workstation GUI, File -> Open, pointed it at this VM, and wonderfully froze VMware Workstation.  (Oops.)  Either the open dialog should block me from doing this or it should show me only the VM details, never giving me the console window.  The crash is an unfortunate answer.

 

All-in-all, I see great promise here.  It is indeed really rough, but I grant it's only a v1, so I can forgive.  I could see this turning really great in time.

Platronics C5220T VMware - Audio Stuttering

I'm using VMware workstation PRO version 15.5.6

Host: Windows 10 PRO ver. 2004

Guest: Windows 10 PRO ver. 2004

If I attach the Platronics 5220T headset, then audio on all application is stutering

When using the headset in the Windows 10 host OS, I have no such problems and the headset works fine.

Has any of you encountered a similar issue ??

Since I just got 15 pro, will this upgrade be free ?

Hi

 

VMWare states Workstation Pro is compatible with any versions of Ubuntu hosts above 14.04 version but 20.04 version being just released does it work well on it without any problems ? out of the existing crash bug when you suspend a guest system (problem i have already in ubuntu 18.04).

Someone has been able to test Workstation Pro on Ubuntu 20.04 ?

VMWare Tools suddenly stopped working with Exception 0xc0000006 (disk error while paging)

Using Workstation 12.5.9 build-7535481

Out of the blue, the error in the subject line pops up when I start my VM.  VMWare tools clipboard no longer works once this error occurs.  Not sure what else may be broken related to Tools.  What is causing this problem and is there a fix?
