Ubuntu 2.04 guest on VMware Workstation 9 under Win7 can't see ext4 USB drive

Ubuntu 2.04 guest on VMware Workstation 9 under Win7: on computer A I trivially connected to an out-of-the-box 64GB USB drive formatted for VFAT on Ubuntu under its VM. I re-init'ed the drive for ext4 (mkfs.ext4), mounted it, dropped a pile of stuff on it (that took a while), unmounted it, and walked away. The next day on identically configured computer B, I inserted the USB drive. Natch, Win7 can't mount it because it doesn't do ext4. But Ubuntu can't see it either, so I can't mount it. Don't see it under Removable Devices, no little icon in the lower left of the VMware screen, nothing in the Settings or Properties menus, etc. I figure this is just me being a VMware noob, but it looks like Ubuntu under VMware Workstation 9 can't see the drive unless Win7 can mount it. Seems unlikely. Searching KB, Googling, etc. yield lots of unrelated stuff. Ideas? AdvTHANKSance.
