Workstation 8 Install Error 1920 - Service VMware Authorization Service did not start.

I keep getting the following error message when trying to install vmwre-workstation-full-8.0.0-471780.exe:

 

Error 1920. Service VMware Authorization Service (VMAuthdService) failed to start.

Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

 

Here is what I have tried so far:

 

- I'm running Windows 7 (X64) with SP1, 8 Intel Xeon E5620 cores, 12 GB of memory.

- Rebooted and tried multiple times (4)

- Ran installation as administrator each time.

- The MD5 sum of the download matches the website.

- No other programs are running.

- VMware workstation 7 was uninstalled first.

- I've searched forums and google but only came across similar problems for different product.  None of the workarounds work here.


USB Device / ACR122u RFID reader 'is currently in use'

This week I bought a new laptop, a Dell Inspiron 15R. I did install VMware workstation 9 and opened up a couple of my VMs. Everything worked perfectly and run smooth, expect connecting removable devices. On my ubuntu machine which I use to read/write to RFID (mifare) card's,

 

Technical information:

-Dell Inspiron 15r (i7, 8GB ram)

-Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

-VMware Workstation 9.0

-I only have USB 3.0 ports

 

I'm getting pretty frustrated about connecting an USB device to my VM. Since a couple of days I'm trying to connect my ACS ACR122u RFID reader to my Ubuntu 11 machine, which I want to use for RFID purposes. Unfortunately I can't connect it. Everytime I try to connect the reader I get the following message "The device is currently in use". Also my Creative Fatal1ty headset, and logitech unyfing receiver (I don't know why I would connect it anyway, but just for testing) won't connect with the same error.

 

I tried many, many things and spent more than just a couple of hours going trough KB's article's, community discussions and google results. For example, I tried all the 'solutions' of this KB article, tried all the different drivers for the reader on my host, tried all the possible combinations of USB settings in the bios, and I also tried to kill all the processes (with Process Explorer) which had anything to do with smartcard's or the reader. Also disabling device's in Device manager doesn't work. Whatever I do, I still get the same error.

 

I also complete uninstalled VMware (clean) and reinstall it again. Did the same with workstation 8, didn't maked any difference.

 

Attached is the logfile of booting the machine, try to connect the reader, and power off the machine and a image of my Device Manager with the reader and all USB-hubs.

 

Does anyone have an idea of what else I can try?

Upgrading Workstation 7 to 9

Hello, we just bought the 7 to 9 upgrade.  When I go to install it, it wants to Uninstall 7 first.  I just want to double check to see thats how VMWare does its upgrade process.  Ive never upgraded a VMWare workstation before and wanted to make sure I got the right install.

Fedora 2 Blinks On and Off At Text Login

Working with software provided with a Linux text, I have attempted multiple times to install the distribution as a virtual machine.  Graphical installation has succeeded just once, so I've gone with the text install.  The release is Fedora 2, Kernal 2.6.5-1.358.

 

However, after multiple attempts at installing the distribution, it still has the same issue...once the startup process has completed and the login screen is presented, the machine starts blinking.  I have included with this post a video taken of the startup and login process.

 

When the screen goes blank, the machine is not accepting key stokes.  This is demonstrated after I successfully log in, when I start typing numbers from one (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11...that sort of thing).  At about the 5:42 mark, the onscreen numbers go from 6, to 26 then 27.

 

I'm thinking the issue has to do with hardware detection, specifically for the monitor, but I'm at a loss as to how to get it to recognise my monitor's resolution.  The host machine is a Lenovo T520, 8GB RAM, 1600x900 resolution.

 

I have been able to successfully install Fedora 17 as a guest machine, both text and graphical, without any problems.  Why am I still trying to figure out how to get Fedora 2 installed then?  I start my new course in a month and I want to have a foot in the door before I start, and I'm working with the presumption that if it's with the text, it's likely to be used as part of the course.

Catch all network setup for guests

Hi!

 

I am trying to set up a "catch all" private, NATed network for VMware Workstation. I've had some success, but ...

 

here is what I want to have:

Network 10.169.19.0/24, router 10.169.19.254 (is it possible to move the router address to something I'd like to have with vmware at all?)

This network shall be "invisible" to the host! If I ping, say 10.169.19.22 I suppose the packets going to the default router configured on my workstation, not to the defined subnet!

 

Now, if I have a guest running, I'd like to set "route add 10.169.19.22 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.141.1". After having done it, pinging the same address again the local running guest is pinged and answers.

 

At the moment I have to set up the guest too:

route del default

route add -host 192.168.141.1 dev eth0

route add default 192.168.141.2 gw 192.168.141.1

 

But I'd like to have some setup avoiding this additional step, because I have to have access to the guests console - this is normaly not the case. Only ssh is allowed.

 

Thus I am searching for a setup allowing to copy/download a VM from the main server to my local workstation, then test various things within this local environment, without changing anything on the guest, only adding the host route to my host (loosing connection to the "real" vm running on the server.

 

Any idea how I could set this up??

IE Crash with npctrl.dll division by zero error

We have one silverlight application that will crash Internet Explorer 8 and 9 with a division by zero error in npctrl.dll only when IE is run on a VM and the silverlight version is 5 (silverlight 4 doesn't crash on the VMs) . When we run IE with silverlight 5 on "bare" metal PC's and Servers we can not reproduce the crash. We've tested this with Workstation 8 and vShere 4 and 5 using Windows 2008 R2 servers and Windows 7 all 64bit.

The crashes don't occurr everytime, sometimes it take dozens of attempts to reproduce, they tend to occur when rapidly moving between tabs or when large record counts are returned to things like pull down lists.

Has anyone had similar issues with silverlight 5?  Could this be a driver issue? I didn't see anything in the KB or download that looked relevant.

Cannot install Centos 6.4 minimal on VMware

Hello,

 

I'm having issues installing Centos 6.4 minimal (64 bit) on VMware. I've tried numerous times, but keep getting stuck at the same place.

 

Here is the problem;

Hello,

 

I'm using VMWare Player v5.0.1 build-894247

 

My host is a win 7x64 laptop. I've been running a guest VM of Win2012 standard for a while and all has been good.

 

Every week I take a backup by shutting down the guest VM, closing VM player then copying the whole folder containing the VM to a network share.

 

Today I needed to go back to a previous backup. I restored the backed up folder from the network share to my laptop's C drive. However, when I tired to open this VM from VMWare Player I got the message: Error while powering on: The file specified is not a virtual disk

 

I have attached a copy of my vmx file. I created this by extracting from a log file. I've also attached a copy of the vmdx file.

 

When VMWare Player attempts to open the VM and fails does it write to any log file? I do have a vmware.log file in the same folder as my VM but this hasn't been updated since yesterday.

 

Could anyone please advise what I can do to recover my VM?

Workstation Domain in the Cloud

I am wondering if anyone has moved their development lab into the cloud? I want to get VMware Workstation off my laptop and into the cloud. I currently have 5 servers in a domain with Exchange and AD. Has anyone done this and how is the cost?

VMWare Tools on SliTaz? (Linux Distro)

I'm trying to install OpenGL on a Linux Distro called SliTaz. I've tried installing VMWare Tools but at the end I get these errors:

I guess they are errors...? Either way i'm unable to start VMWare tools, but in the task manager I see vmtoolsd running on root.

 

OpenGL still does not work for me though, I enabled 3D acceleration in the settings and re-booted but it still doesn't work :c

Ubuntu Server 12.04.2 CLI Screen Resolution

Just wondering if there is a way to set fullscreen (like 1920x1080 or 1600x900) on Ubuntu Server because it display by default on 640x480 I guess

 

I searched all around the Internet and I've found nothing revelant...

 

I know there is Putty and It works fine but it's not my goal

Lync 2010 headsets do not work in Workstation v9

I have been using the full Microsoft Lync 2010 client in a Windows 7 VM using VMware Workstation v 8 for some time now.

I have been using the Plantronics Voyager UC V2 Bluetooth and C710M USB headsets. Both are certified for Lync 2010 by Microsoft.

In Workstation v 8 they both work very well with Lync in a W7 VM and I am able to make and receive phone calls.

After upgrading to VMware workstation v 9 neither head set works. I cannot make a phone call. There is usually no error reported just no audio through the headsets. Occasionally the Lync client will report audio problems and suggest trying a different headset but that only happened a couple times.

I have tried uninstalling VMWare tools and running without and then re-installing them. It never works.

I backed down to Workstation v 8 and everything is fine again and I am able to make and receive calls.

Obviously something is broken in workstation v 9.

 

The Lync servers and AD environment itself are in a completely separate server environment. I use this host to run virtual workstations in various configurations for testing purposes.

 

The host machine has plenty of power.

Host config:

ASUS Sabertooth X79 motherboard

Intel Core I7 3930K CPU

32GB RAM

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

 

Guest config:

1 CPU, 1 core

2GB RAM

Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit

Fatal Application Error in Workstation 9.0.1

I'm running with a Windows 7 x64 host, Workstation 9.0.1.

 

I have been using 9.0.1 for about a month now, after upgrading from 8.0.1. I have noticed a random issue that has happened a couple of times now.

This crashes workstation, but doesn't seem to impact the running VMs.

I often run multiple Workstation instances (up to 3 at a time); is it possible that there is a shared file issue with multiple instances?

 

Either way it doesn't happen very often and is worked around by restarting Workstation, but I figured I'd post about it so if anyone else encounters the issue they have something to search for.

Sharing a NAS via Shared folders files marked read-only

I have a FreeNAS system the the Windows 7 VMWare Workstation 9.0.2 host connects to.  The login is via local permissions and accounts on the NAS. Mounting as the P: drive on the host everything works as expected, I can read and write files without any issues.  However, on both Windows and Linux guest machines I map the drive mapped to the NAS as a shared folder and in the guest OS all the files are marked as read-only.  On the Linux guests, I just map the UID and everything works because the UID matches and the OS lets me operate on the files.  However, in the Windows guest I cannot find any way to override the permissions to allow writes regardless of the owner of the files.

 

I have to use a shared folder instead of connecting to the NAS directly because the VM guest machines will connect to a remote VPN and I would lose access to the NAS while the VPN was connected.

 

How do I get the windows guest to not maps these files (which are read/write in the host) to be read/write in the guest OS?

Unity mode exits on all running guests

I run between 1-4 guests at any given time under Workstation 9 on a Windows 7 host on my Sony Vaio Z laptop.  These guests are a range of Ubuntu versions.  I would like to run them in Unity mode, and for the most part this works fine.  However, throughout the day, Unity mode will randomly exit on all of the guests at the same time.  I then have to restart the VMWare Tools service on each of them before they can be put back into Unity mode.  I have contacted VMWare support on this issue many times over the past couple weeks and they keep telling me Ubuntu's Unity is not supported, despite repeated explanations that I am not running Ubuntu's Unity desktop on any of the guests.  Also, the fact that VMWare Tools dies on all of the guests simultaneously seems to suggest it is not an issue with the guests exclusively.  This has been more difficult to diagnose because I cannot reliably recreate the issue.  It happens at least once a day, but I have been unable to determine a pattern.  I usually notice it has happened when I wake up the laptop from sleep, but I can suspend/wake it 10 times in a row to try to recreate the issue and it will continue to work fine.  Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

Hello All,

 

There are several applications which are not yet available for Linux which I use and I will be running them in VMware via a Windows virtual machine. I have VMware Workstation 9 running on an UBuntu 12.04.1 host. When I shutdown my virtual machines to close VMware at the end of the night VMware will not release my keyboard and mouse to the host OS and I frequently wind up needing to shutdown/reboot my host via power button. Needless to say that is not a good practice. Prior to switching my host OS to Linux I was using Workstation 8. Is there some new option that I need to enable to tell VMware to release my input devices to the host OS? This happens even after a fresh host OS install with no non-standard applications installed. I also tried both Unity and Gnome as my GUI and it made no difference. I sincerely hope this is not a bug in Workstation and if so they will fix it soon. I also tried running all Ubuntu updates and ensured Workstation 9 has no available updates. Any help is greatly appreciated.

hi

i m using fujistu laptop  the configuration is intel pentium dual core processor b960 ,speed 2.2 ghz , ram 4 gb , 64 bit os .

i want to install vmware ws in my pc . is it possible to  install the same or it needs higher configuration .

This happens when trying to suspend XP with all SPs and patches. The host is Win7x64 on I7 with 12 GB RAM and the VMs are on a dedicated velociraptor 300. There is plenty of available RAM and disk space.

 

What now?
