Problem Creating CENT-OS 6.4 Virtual Machine

Tried installing centos 6.4 x64 on my Workstation 9.0.2 Virtual Machine several times. I'm using the minimal version of centos.

During the install I get a number of messages about various package missing. The first package that is complains about is gcc. I just did and ignore all thining that these packages are not part of the minimal version. This install completed and then the OS boots. I get to the end of the boot and it just hangs.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks

Support for hibernation

I've read a few threads on this forum about guest hibernation support in Windows, but no clear answers as to whether or not it is officially supported, particularly on Windows 8.

I've discovered that it's possible to enable guest hibernation in VMware Workstation by removing the plugin vmsvc\disableGuestHibernation.dll, so that the vmware tools service does not set power information on startup to disable the hibernation feature (ReserveHiberFile = FALSE).  This indeed does allow me to enable hibernation (powercfg /h on) such that the hibernate option appears in the start menu.  Works for Windows 7 and 8.

However, although Windows properly resumes from hibernation (I can see expected driver output in Windbg, which tells me the OS is back on its feet), the VMWare console does not show the desktop.  It's just a black screen.  Verified this behavior on Windows 7 x64 SP1 and Windows 8 x86.  The only option is to force shtudown the VM (power off).

Issue with Workstation 9, Windows 8 and Storage Spaces

Hi,

I am currently having a strange issue with VMWare Workstation 9 running on Windows 8 when my VMs are hosted on a Storage Spaces setup as a mirror. My Windows VMs are running just fine but all my Linux VMs appear to be getting corrupted after a succesful boot and shutdown cycle. When I try to restart them, they bomb on me on what seems to be disk corruption. I attached a filed RHEL 6 x64 failed boot for reference.

Any ideas what may be causing this? I believe it may be related to Storage Spaces as when take a clean copy of the VM (before it got corrupted) on move it on a drive that is not using Storage Spaces everything works just fine.

What really puzzles me is why would Windows VMs not be affected by Linux VMs are going bad after one boot cycle...

Any help on that one would be greatly appreciated,

Francois.

Connect to Localhost from another machine

Hello,

I have a problem. I have two virtual machines, on one of them I have centos (server version) and in the other I have ubuntu.

On centos, I have installed OpenVZ, and Openvz web panel. The web panel can only be accessed via browser, but obviously, centos server has no GUI for this to work.

For this reason, to connect to the web panel on centos, I need to find a way to connect to it with Ubuntu browser. This is where the problem is.

1. Both Ubuntu and Centos can see each other, if I do;

ping ubuntuIP or ping CentosIP

It will ping correctly.

2. The web panel on centos url is; server1.example.com:3000

But I cannot connect or ping to this from Ubuntu.

I think in retrospect, I need to be able to connect to Centos's localhost/127.0.0.1 (which is server1.example.com) from Ubuntu.

But have had no fortune with this yet.

Does anyone have a solution for running Workstation9 on openSuse12.1?

I have installed workstation9 on my OpenSuse 12.1 Kernel 3.5 version and installed the Kernel patch but after reboot still get the message: Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to. And after changing number of processors I get error 14: Pipe connection has been broken.

This is for a newly created VM that has not yet been equipped with an OS. Is there a fix available for this yet?

I have Centos 6.4 and I instaleld the X Window System and gnome Desktop. When I power up my Guest VM I get the CENTOS loading bars at the bottom, but when they complete, nothing happens. I don't get my gnome desktop. If I hit cntrl-alt-F6, it takes me to the Shell. Why doesn't gnome start?

Searching for a valid kernel header path...

The path "" is not a valid path to the 3.7.10-1.1-desktop kernel headers.

Would you like to change it? [yes]

Enter the path to the kernel header files for the 3.7.10-1.1-desktop kernel?

I tried "/usr/src/linux-3.7.10-1.1" but that didn't work.
What should I specify for the path to the kernel headers?

Workstation 9, Host Windows 8-64Bit, Guest Windows XP-32 Crash...

Not sure where to begin, but I did try a search and didn't really come across my same problem.  Can someone help me with this? Perhaps a solution is already posted but I didn't find it.

Host Machine is a HP Envy DV7 Laptop with Windows 8 - 64 Bit

Guest Machine is WIndows XP Pro SP3 32-bit

I've tried both a clone of a working Windows XP (Clean install) and I've also tried creating a new WIndows XP Guest.  Both guest machines crash on startup and without warning cause my host to reboot.  When I start the Guest XP, I get the VM Logo, then when it switch to boot machine and before I get a windows screen, the host computer will reboot.

I read that perhaps turning off the "Auto Connect of the CD/DVD Drive" would help, but I still have the same problem.

I really need XP VM's to work and if that ultimately means I need to downgrade my Host from Win 8 to Win 7 then so be it. I just hope that's not the case because I just bought this laptop 2 days ago for specifically running my VM's.

Thanks,

Tyler

Vmware 5.9

I have Bridged mode set to Automatic on one of my VM's.

When the VM is connected to the domain with it's own domain name/account, the wired connection works but wireless doesn't. The host has functional wireless.

I changed the network settings on the guest to be static IP, with an appropriate address and netmask.

also i have tried

vmnet0 is bridged to the wired network and vmnet2 to wireless

but still not work

Excessive disk I/O on .vmdk file

I am running VMWare Workstation 7 on a Windows 7 64-bit host.

My virtual machine is running extremely slowly because of constant i/o activity on the host.

The proccess that is causing the high i/o is vmware-vmx.exe and it is doing it on one of the virtual machines' .vmdk files.

Could someone help to see why this is so?

Thank you

Problems with vmrun on Workstation 9 and Shared VMs?!??!

Hi.

So basicly im running some psexec commands from a batchfile on some demo images who starts a batchfile on the host who then reverts the snapshot to a snapshot om my choosing and then starting it again.

The reason for this is so that users can remote connect (temviewer ect) to the image, do some testing shitt and run a file on the desktop to revert the image to a "clean" state wich is saved in a snapshot.

My problem is after upgrading to WS9 where i have 1 image who i duplicate and open one the normal way in WS and run the other as a "Shared VM".
I can not get the vmrun.exe commands to work on images who run as a "Shared VM", it works fine when i dont run them in that state.

Now, my first thought was that it would not work but when i share the image and a co-worker opens it he can Revert to snapshot from the menu, wich tells me there should be a way to do the same in vmrun.exe

Do anyone know how to do this? Ive looked trough http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vix-api/vix112_vmrun_command.pdf without finding what im looking for.

So to be clear, i need a way to use "revertToSnapshot" and "Start" in vmrun.exe on images thats being shared in as "Shared VMs".......

H E L P!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance!

shared folder locks *.exe files on host

$

Host: Win7x64

Guest: WinXPPro

I use shared folders mapped as network drive in the guest.

I access the *.exe file from within the guest OS - for example copy the file, or only open an explorer window showing the directory where the file is located.

After this, it is impossible to delete/overwrite the file from the host!

Error message tells me the file is still open in VMWare Workstation VMX.

This happens even if I closed the explorer window.

There is no virus scan running inside the guest.

I must delete the file from within the guest OS.

I can't see why the file is locked.

Is this a bug or do I miss something?

USB Headset and Sound

I'm having difficulty with my USB-based headset in a guest  session. My Skype softphone and sound properties in my guest freeze when  my headset is connected to the guest. This is not an immediate affect, though it is  inevitable.

I understand VoIP is data-intensive. Questions...may this be causing the freezing of the sound properties, and what may I do to assure there is enough data throughput.

VM Workstation V9 "the file specified is not a virtual disk"

I am using Workstation 9 and run all of my VM's from an external hard drive.   When I open up two of my most frequently used VM's the "Hard Disk" under devices is blank and when I try to start the VM it gives me the error "the file specified is not a virtual disk"

It looks like all of my .vmdk's are present and accounted for.

Any ideas why the "Hard Disk" field is blank?

Dual Boot win 7 on pc+ Mac os on Vmware???

I installed mac os on vmware. Now I want to dual boot win 7 on pc + mac os on vmware.

Allow OS to be booted native or as VM?

$

I'd like to be able to boot a windows 7 or 8 partition as either the native OS, or else as a VM guest under windows 7. What's the best way to do this?

I currently run a windows 7 guest under a windows 7 host, but was wanting to add a new dual boot partition to the host, and allow this to also run as a VM under the existing host OS.

Habe people had any good results doing this? What would be the best setup for the new OS - windows 8 with a virtual hard disk? Are there any problems I'm likely to stumble over? Does it still need different hardware profiles for the OS?

I remember trying something similar a good while back, probably with workstation v4 or v5 and windows XP, and I know I had problems that caused me to give up with it - disk corruptions and such like...

Thanks for any advice...

Windows 7 host, usb controller drivers on Windows guests?

$

Hello.

I'm currently on the trial period for Workstation 9. My host machine is a Windows 7 64-bit laptop and its usb ports are usb 2.0 and do work normally on the host. I have two guest virtual machines: a Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit VM and a Windows 2000 Pro SP4 VM. They do work otherwise, but connecting usb pen drives or an external hard drive to a VM  is slow, and so are the transfer speeds from and to the connected usb drive. I started looking into it and benchmarking data transfer speeds on the removable drives when they're connected to the guest. The speed was always under 1,5 megabytes per second. So it seems the guest usb port is usb 1.1. And the drivers for usb controllers on the guests are generic Windows drivers, aren't they supposed to be VMWare's own drivers for virtual devices?

My host's USB controllers in  Device Manager:

Host - Win 7.jpg

USB Controllers of XP guest:

Guest - XP Pro SP3.jpg

VMWare Settings of XP guest:

Guest - XP PRO SP3 - Settings.jpg

And USB Controllers of Win2k Guest:

Guest - Win2k.jpg

VMWare Settings of Win2k Guest:

Guest - Win2k Pro SP4 - Settings.jpg

I have tried reinstalling VMWare Tools. It does nothing. I have also tried uninstalling guests' USB controllers and reinstalling them. Whether I do it inside the guest OS or by removing and re-adding USB controller in Virtual Machine Settings, the effect is the same. When the guest OS is started again, it automatically detects new hardware and re-installs generic Windows drivers.

I don't plan on using any other external devices on guests than USB drives, but even though they work, copying files is painfully slow. How do I get the right drivers installed for my guests?

"connection to usb device unsuccessful, device in use"

I just upgraded my host machine to a brand new laptop (with the latest and greatest drivers, running Win 7 Pro), that only has USB 3.0 ports.  When I connect any usb device, (scanner, hard drive, whatever), to my host machine everything is fine,  but when I try to connect that same devices to any of my VM's (Win 8, Vista, doesn't matter), I get the "Connection to USB device <device name> was unsuccessful.  Device in use" error.  Everything still works fine on my OLD machine when I connect those same VM's and devices thru USB 2.0 ports.  My VM's are set to USB 3.0 compatability in the settings, I even tried it on 2.0 compatability.  I was using VM player (just downloaded latest updates), then tried Workstation 9.0 (with latest updates).  None of the other posts I could find on this subject were applicable or worked.  Any help would be appreciated.
