Hi,

I have vmware workstation 9.0.2 build-1031769. I would like to disconnect network device using vmwaretoolboxcmd.exe tool. But the tool is not listing any of my devices

"vmwaretoolboxcmd.exe  device list " exits without displaying any devices

"vmwaretoolboxcmd.exe  device disable ethernet0 " command throws error as could not find device.

"vmwaretoolboxcmd.exe -v " shows 9.2.3.21136 (build-1031360)

what could be the reason? in vmware workstation 8 these commands work as expected and i could disconnect/connect devices.

Bad performance after P2V caused by "ACPI MultiProcessor"

Hello.

I did a P2V conversion.physical counterpart is winxp e5200 1g ram.After conversion,the guest performance is really poor.

I tried all ways in http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1013857 says.

There is no improvement, until I changed computer to "ACPI PC" mode in Device Manager. The performance will be good. But it can only detect 1 vCPU.

"ACPI MultiProcessor PC" or "ACPI UniProcessor PC" will cause bad performance.

So the probelm:Is it possible guest detect 2 or more vCPUs in "ACPI PC" mode?

Workstation errors since creating Win8.1 Update 1 VM

Hi there, I'm hoping someone can help me out with a frustrating Workstation problem.

I first saw the problem when creating a new Win8.1 Update1 VM from a standard MSDN ISO (en_windows_8.1_enterprise_with_update_x64_dvd_4065178.iso) but it has now spread to all my VMs so I'm not sure if it's directly related to Win8.1 Update 1. Now whenever I try to delete, revert or create a new snapshot in any VM, most of the time I'll get an unrecoverable error similar to these:

Error.jpgerror2.jpg

If I retry several times it will eventually do what I want to so it's definitely an intermittent issue. When I first saw the problem I was using an older version of Workstation 9 so I upgraded to 10.0.1 build-1379776 but if anything it's got worse.

Googling hasn't come up with anything useful so I'm hoping you guys might be able to point me in the right direction. An example log file (related to the first screenshot) has been attached. That particular instance occurred when I tried to revert to an older snapshot of a Win7 x64 VM that I have been using without issue for weeks. The second screenshot happened on my new Win8.1 VM when I reverted back to a snapshot I created yesterday. Error is broadly the same but has changed from "Could not find the file (6)" to "The operation was cancelled by the user (1)". I can promise you I didn't cancel anything!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Linux 15 Host Win 8.1 Guest - Can't copy from host to Guest

This seem to come about on the latest update of 10.2. Hopefully there is a setting I missed and it is an easy fix. I can copy from my guest Win 8.1 to my Linux host by not the other way. This makes it obnoxious to copy and past a URL or script or anything for that matter. I would love to find a resolve to this issue as I know of others with the same problem.

Thank you,

VMware Workstation Technology Preview 2014

I have not tried this yet but the change log doesn't seem too radical.  Hope this won't be yet another $129 upgrade.  Given past previews however (as well as mention of WS 11 hardware) this doesn't seem likely

Workstation 9: Mouse does not leave VM window (Windows XP guest, Tools installed)

Problem description:

When the mouse is grabbed by the VM, the mouse does not leave the VM when moved to the borders.

Host OS: Ubuntu 10.04 64bit, all updates installed. Happens with and without visual effects enabled.

Problem also present with Workstation 9.0 (e.x.p) WTP and 9.0.0 build-812388

VMWare tools have been installed to the newest version.

The problem is reproducible when creating the VM from scratch with a Windows XP SP2 Install CD with and without easy install.

I also have tried installing tools before any Windows updates and after installing SP3.

The following steps ENABLE the automatic ungrabbing but have other issues (might help in determining the cause):

Variant 1:

1. remove USB hub from VM (this alone does not work)

2. uninstall the VMWare Pointing Device driver

3. reboot

-> After reboot the Mouse pointer is able to automatically ungrab, however mouse is sluggish

-> Windows redetects the VMMouse and installs driver again

4. reboot

-> back to old behavior (unable to automatically ungrab)

Variant 2:

1. Edit VMX file:

vmmouse.present = "FALSE"

mouse.vusb.enable = "FALSE"

2. boot to XP

-> able to escape borders (automatic ungrab)

-> mouse is sluggish, does not ungrab when trying to click on host window in front of VM

Any help would be appreciated! Automatic ungrab is one of the most important features for seamlessly working with a VM...

Not enough physical memory is available to power on this virtual machine with its configured settings.

To fix this problem, increase the amount of physical memory for all virtual machines to 391 MB or adjust the additional memory settings to allow more virtual machine memory to be swapped.

If you were able to power on this virtual machine on this host computer in the past, try rebooting the host computer. Rebooting may allow you to use slightly more host memory to run virtual machines.

vmware workstation 9 bridged networking not working

$

hello everyone,

I have been using vmware player for awhile now and just recently i started having problems with my guest os (ubuntu linux) not working with bridged networking. Here is some information...

Main host os (windows 7)

Guest os (ubuntu linux 64bit)

So for some reason the only networking mode that will work is NAT. I was using bridged mode for awhile and just about 2 weeks ago it stopped working and I have no idea why.

So i tried upgrading from vmware player to workstation 9 because I know that workstation 9 comes with virtual adapter editor and I have tried using that but I can not get bridged mode to work.

Okay so here is what has been happening...

When i select bridged networking it gives me the ip address 192.168.1.2 and my windows box is 192.168.1.10

when I am in linux under bridged mode i can ping my 192.168.1.2 address i can ping 192.168.1.10 (windows box) and i can ping my linux box/guest os (192.168.1.2) from windows.

I can also ping my gateway 192.168.1.1 from my guest os (ubuntu)

I can ping google.com and everything seems to be working, but i can not get any internet access. When i try ssh'ing into a remote computer (outside my network) it does not work and when i try to do "apt-get update" it does not work.

Now I have tried many things with vmware workstation 9

I have tried setting under device network adapter -> bridged (automatic)

then i go to virtual network editor -> bridged (automatic) i have a list of 5 virtual adapters I have tried selecting all and I have tried selecting my main internal wireless network card a (realtek rtl8188ce) but nothing is working!

I was going to purchase vmware workstation but since I can not get bridged mode to work I am not sure anymore...

Can anyone here please help me out?

I am lost on ideas and I don't know what to do...

One thing I am thinking is maybe it is a DHCP issue. Since my windows (main host os) is 192.168.1.10 shouldn't my bridged ip address for my guest operating system (ubuntu) be 192.168.1.11?

Does anyone here have any ideas, i am desperate!

I thank you all for your help and assistance...

I have been a loyal VMWare Workstation customer for many years, always purchasing the upgrades and recommending the VMWare solutions to my customers.

This is the first issue I encountered with the VMWare Workstation product and when I called technical support, they said my complementary 30 days of free support expired and I must pay for support or use the forums. I am pretty upset about.

The issue appeared about a week and a half ago. It doesn't always happen when I start a virtual machine or even the same virtual machine but since I am opening a number of virtual machines each day, I face this error daily at some point. When this error dialog pops up is when I am starting a new virtual machine (doesn't matter if this is the first one I am starting or this is the second one running, or third). I click to start the virtual machine and the boot screen seems to take an inordinate amount of time (the black screen with the spinning square). Finally, the error dialog pops up:

VmWareWorkstationError.jpg

When I click OK, I cannot run any virtual machines from that point on without getting an "Internal Error" immediately as shown below.

VMWareInternalError.jpg

I then have to shut everything down all my applications and physically reboot my laptop before I can run any virtual machines - existing running virtual machines seem unaffected (also my laptop seems sluggish after this error occurs). I then have to start the process over again until I get the error again at some point and have to repeat.

The recommendation of editing the .vmx files and setting vmci0.present = "FALSE" does not prevent this issue from occurring.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled VMWare Workstation twice but the problem still exists.

I am running Windows 8.1 Professional with all patches installed.

The last program I can remember installing is StorageCraft ShadowProtect Backup and Disaster Recovery Software for Windows Servers and Desktops but I am not sure this is related to the issue. This is backup software.

I am not sure what I can do to resolve this error and go back to my regular daily use of my software.

Thank You,

Alan

HELP my keyboard doesn't work in my virtual machine!

$

I have a pretty straightfoward setup. Thinkpad T430 running XP SP 3. Used standalone converter to convert to VM and also resized it down onto a USB hard drive. When given the choice of export formats I chose VMware player 5.0.

Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Installed VMware Player 5.0. Opened saved VM. Keyboard AND mouse (trackpad) don't work in guest. Work fine in OS, I click in guest, and nothing, stuck at XP login screen.

Ok so I then installed VMware Workstation 9.0 (since updated to 9.0.2). Opened same VM. This time mouse works fine. No keyboard. I checked in Device Manager, It's "Standard PS/2 Keyboard". Can't install tools because I can't log in. I even setup a bluetooth keyboard, then clicked the setting to pass Bluetooth keyboards over. I can click in the guest, try to type on the Bluetooth keyboard, and nothing happens. But I can hit ctrl-alt, get focus back, and alt-tab away so I know my keyboard is working.

This is absurdly simple compared to what VMWare products are capable of. What is going on? I have googled endlessly and found NOTHING of assistance other than checking my device manager on the host.

Please someone help me, this is driving me insane. I've spent hours on what should be a straightforward operation. And I need to get back into that XP Machine!

\Edit: I want to add that when I select the boot into BIOS option I do have keyboard usage. It's something in the virtual machine for XP. But I don't know how to fix it and re-building is not possible.

Resuming VM from iSCSI physical disk fails (disk in use error)

$

I've run into a problem with resuming a suspended VM from an iSCSI disk. I made an iSCSI target on my NAS device and used it as a physical disk to install VM (Windows 8 Pro x64) onto. Everything went smoothly and I did not encounter any problem at that time.

Few days later, I tried to resume the suspended VM, but VMware Workstation always fails now with an error "The physical disk is already in use". iSCSI disk is connected via built-in Microsoft iSCSI initiator and is not mounted in the host operating system (no drive letter assigned) - see attachment.

Task Manager in Windows indicates no activity on the disk. I've tried to disable antivirus/firewall (ESET Smart Security) but that did not help either. I'm desperate and totally clueless what might be causing the problem. If any of you could provide a hint or suggest a solution, I would be really grateful, as it took me some time to setup the guest OS. Thank you very much.

Hi All,

I've a Lenovo W520 running Windows 7 Ultimate X64. I've VMWare Workstation 10 installed as I use it for my SharePoint Development. I've several images ranging from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2.

The problem is that almost 95% of the time, there is no internet on the guest. Sometimes it come & goes, most times none. I always use the default network "NAT".

How can I fix this issue?

Unable to install SBS 2011 Std on Workstation 10

I've run a few VMs before, but none of them server editions.  I want to install a VM of SBS on my Win 8 machine that is running Workstation 10.

My machine is a Core i5, 16GB, 2TB drive. I've given the VM 8GB, 1 cpu with 4 cores and 160GB.  The install process shows no errors and gets all the way to attempting to load the desktop.  From this point I just get a light blue screen and nothing more.

I've also tried the process on other machines and have the same issue.  The SBS image is a good one as it has made disks that install real servers.

Hi,

I installed worktstation on windows 8.1, everything looks and works fine at first. However, after I started workstation I'm having an internet problem;

  • When using pc without starting workstation everything works fine.
  • After I started workstation and then virtual servers (approximately 10-20 minutes), my physical pc's internet connection stops working.
  • A yellow exclamation mark starts to appear network adapter icon on taskbar.
  • Without restart my pc i cant use internet internet connection.

I searched on forum bu I coulndt find a solution. I saw that some the users have same problem but there wasn't a solution.

I need help about that.

Thank you.

Can't use two VMs at once

$

Hi,

I am running VMWare Workstation 10.0.2.

Ever since I have mapped one of my internal hard drives to one of my VMs, I have not been able to use two VMs at once.

The VM with the mapped hard drive runs normally, but when I start a second one (running either Windows or Linux), I have no input on it (mouse or keyboard).

If I stop my VM with the mapped hard drive, the second VM works fine without needing a reboot.

I can use my two VMs at the same time if I remove the mapped hard drive from my first VM.

Any idea what could be causing this ?

Thanks.

USB serial devices unusable after upgrade to Workstation 9.0

Does anyone have information about communication errors occurring on USB devices related to Workstation 9.0?

I recently upgraded a perfectly functioning system from Workstation 7.1 to Workstation 9.0 and now the serial USB devices malfunction, often dropping data, makeing them entirely unusable.

Yes, I've tried updating the VMware Tools in the guest, this does not help, the errors still occur.

The problem occurs in Windows 7 64-bit host, Windows XP guest, and Windows 7 64-bit guest.
