Hi guys,

i'm running 5 VMs playing league of legends but after 30 min my display driver crashes causing black screen even if the driver has recovered. I tried to restart every virtual machine but it keeps crashing causing my game to stop.

my setup is: Intel core i5 2300, 8GB ram (512 Ram for each VMs), nvidia gtx 660ti, ssd corsair gt 120GB

Any fix for this problem?

Can't register my Workstation 10 Serial number

WS 10.0.2 works on Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic) kernel 3.15.0-2-generic

I was totally surprised when I installed Ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.15.0-2-generic on my system already patched (Archlinux) for kernel 3.14.  Everything works without recompiling (probably uselessly) WS.  This includes autostarting a shared Windows 8.1 VM

I'd appreciate it if somebody can confirm.

Hi,

Hope someone can shed some light on this issue.

I have tried to install version 7, 9 and 10 of Workstation on my newly built server but it fails after running the executable.

I had a look through this forum and the web and the only thing I could see was to check that Hyper V was installed and its not.

I've tried using compatibility mode and running as admin this did not change the error.

Any help would be great.

Capturing mouse cursor movement when taking a video

Hi,

I use VMWare Workstation 7 on Windows 8.1. I'm doing a UX review of some software and I need to take a video showing how I'm using each of its features.

I'm using the normal VMWare 'capture video' option and I'm having two problems:

1. The video doesn't capture the action of opening the program. I start the session, which I'm recording, with the program not running and then open the program in various ways (from shortcuts, from the taskbar notification area and so on). But when I stop the session and play the video back, the nothing happens - I just see my virtual machine's Windows desktop.

2. Ok, so the I open the program before I start recording. Now the software shows up on the video and you can see it's various features and menus opening and closing as I use them. But you can't see the mouse cursor - it just doesn't show up on the video. So not only does windows open and close by themselves, you can't really see what buttons I clicked to open them.

Anyone know why this is and how to fix it?

Best regards

Karl

Request for feature: Please let me use my other VMs when "Cleaning up deleted files" is working

Hello VMware developers, can you please fix VMware Workstation 10 so that I can continue using the other VMs I have open after I have deleted a snapshot? There is a cleaning up deleted files message that takes like 20 minutes a snapshot . So for 20 minutes I can't use my VMs or anything. That's ridiculous! Change from the modal window please so I can minimize the window and continue working. I have 6 VMs open right now and I can't interact with any of them until this is done. Thank you.

Choppy / Stutter / Slow Audio in XP Guest on Workstation 9

I'm having an issue with audio in an XP SP3 guest, which was P2V and then run in Workstation 9 on a Windows 8 host.  The windows default system sounds such as startup and shutdown, and playing MP3s, result in the audio being very slow, maybe about half the original speed, and stuttery/choppy and all around poor quality.  Interestingly, this issue does not occur when playing audio from video files in MPC-HC and audio sounds fine when playing YouTube videos in the guest.

The host is running an onboard Realtek ALC892 8-Channel HD audio chip, but in the guest the sound card shows up as the typical SoundBlaster PCI (es1371).

The VMX file only has the following sound settings currently in it:

sound.present = "TRUE"
sound.filename = "-1"
sound.autodetect = "TRUE"

I've tried changing the VM's hardware level to WS8 and WS7-6.  And tried setting up the VMX with the following setting: sound.virtualDev = “hdaudio” (lost audio entirely there).  Also from within the host I attempted to update the drivers for the PCI Soundblaster, allowed Windows to search for a new driver and it found something, and installed it - but nothing has helped with the choppy audio.

I've got the latest VMware Tools installed as well, tried uninstalling and reinstalling too.

Is there anything else I can try to get this fixed?  Thanks.

Curious UEFI 32 bit DVD Boot Issue

$

I have been using Workstation 10 to build various desktop system images which I would then use Symantec System Restore 2013 (SSR) to deploy to physical systems.

I use a DVD iso image which is UEFI bootable but the issue still occurs when I connect the VM to the physical DVD.

I have different versions of Windows images (Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1). Win 7 and Vista are just 64 bit but Win 8 and 8.1 support UEFI in both 32 bit and 64 bit variants - I have successfully installed both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. When booting off the SSR DVD (using F12 to select the boot device) to create the system deployment images the 64 bit VMs recognise the SSR DVD and boot correctly. However when booting of the SSR DVD in a 32bit VM, the VM recognises the DVD (it appears in the boot options menu)  but won't actually boot from it. On a physical system it doesn't matter what the installed OS is, SSR will boot correctly. I need to stress that this issue only occurs on UEFI VMs, if the VM is built with an MBR disk then it doesn't matter if the OS is 32bit or 64bit as the SSR DVD will boot in all of them.

I "suspect" that it may be related to the fact that the SSR DVD is built upon Windows 8.1 64bit WinPE. My workaround is to edit the VM settings and change the OS version to the 64bit equivalent; which then allows the DVD to boot, the following issue is that the 32bit OS then won't boot and I have to edit it back so I can modify the system image. This leads me to believe there is something in the VMWare settings which is causing the issue and that people who may want to chop and change between 32bit and 64bit utility CD/DVDs will have a lot of issues.

Has anyone else come across this and is my workaround appropriate?

Thanks

Unable to open kernel device "\\.\VMCIDev\VMX"

Hello,

for the past few months i have been trying to figure out a solution for this problem and i really hav high hopes in this thread!

Here's the problem:-

Every time i try powering on my virtual machine it says

" Unable to open kernel device "\\.\VMCIDev\VMX": Overlapped I/O operation is in progress. Did you reboot after installing VMware Player?

Module DevicePowerOn power on failed. "

I have tried to to edit the .vmx file and replace the TRUE with FALSE next to vmci0.present and i have also tried deleting the file

PLEASE i need help really badly. Specially from the experts.

And if u think that my system doesn't support hardware virtualisation, then that's not the case because i hav previously installed the virtual machine before but i had to remove it for a few reasons! :'(

i also have another problem. i've installed vmware workstation on my external hard drive, so whenever i try to re-install or repair or uninstall my software it can't. it says that the "MSI" failed to install.

THANKS

What should I do before starting to install nVidia's driver?

I have a nvidia Geforce graphics card which has been inserted in the PCIe slot. Now I want to use it in ubuntu hosted in the VMware Workstation. When I run nvidia's driver installer (sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.79.run), it says there is no supported GPU found in the system. But the model is supported by the linux driver, as claimed by nVidia. So what should I do in VMware Workstation to make the Geforce graphics card available for the driver installer so I can install the driver in ubuntu?

I'm using VMware Workstation 9.0.2 build-1031769, Host OS is Windows 7 64 bit and Guest OS is ubuntu 14.04. If you need more info, please feel free to ask. Thank you.

Attached is the screenshot of driver installer.

Copy/paste does not work between a shared VM and host, VMware Workstation 9

Hello,

I observed copy/paste operation does not work between a shared VM and host. The VM is shared by VMware Workstation v9. I tried the isolation.tools.copy.disable = "FALSE" and isolation.tools.paste.disable = "FALSE" in .vmx file and restarted the shared VM but these did not make any difference to the copy/paste.

Do you have any idea how to make copy/paste operation work between the shared VM and host?

The same copy/paste problem will come up  when I connect to a shared VM via VMware WSX server.

VM 10 W8.1 upgrade inplace

$

Noticed a warning in the event viewer on 8.1 pro 64 bit about having to uninstall WS 10 and reinstall after upgrade.

Been having a lot of host freezing problems along with Driver power state failure events.

I just did an inplace upgrade to the latest WS through the check for updates release, does it do a complete uninstall and reinstall or do I have to do everything manually?

Storing my VM on a USB Flash Key or SD Card

$

So in the old versions of Workstation they had the Pocket ACE feature which optimized VMs to run from a flash drive or SD card.  I think they did a bunch of things like store the memory file locally, cache a bunch of things in memory and make certain optimizations as to how the hard drive is laid out.  While things never ran as fast as having the VM locally, the convenience of having it on a movable external flash drive sometimes make the use case worthwhile.

So ACE is gone now, and those options no longer show up in Workstation.  Is there some sort of guide for deploying a VM onto an SD card or USB Flash Drive?  I found one in the KB, but it was for WS 6.0 and recommended using ACE.  Obviously that's pretty obsolete.

Ubunut 13.04 doesn't launch after updating Workstation to 10.0.2 on windows 8.1

Hi,

I'm hoping that somebody may have a resolution to my problem.

Yesterday I updated Workstation from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2 on a Windows 8.1 host.

However Ubuntu 13.04 doesn't launch anymore.

The first error I received was that CPU was disabled but after closing and restarting workstation many times

I did not see that message just nothing happens.  Am I the only one with this new problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I plan to use vmware workstation 10 as our lite servers. there will be 3 guest servers on 1 host.

each server act as application server. if each guest I decide to make configuration:

- 4 processors

- Ram 8GB

- HDD 80 GB

1. what configuration I need to make for host?

2. also, is shared vm support for usb drive ( I can attach USB drive directly to vmware - shared vm)?

thanks in advance
