Cannot SSH/telnet from windows host to linux guest

$

Hello,

I have setup a bridge networking using VMnet0 between my host and guest. I cannot SSH or telnet from my windows 7 host to guest Centos 5.6. Host can ping guest and vice versa. My linux guest can browse the Internet. I have tried this with my Intel wireless NIC and Realtek PCIe GBE and the result is the same.

I have disabled firewall on both host and guest and I have disabled Anti-virus.

I am running VMPlayer 3.1.

If I change from bridge to host-only, I can do SSH or telnet.

Doing a Google on this issue, I found one article saying the TCP checksum offload with Realtek was causing it. I disabled TCP, UDP and IPv4 Checksum offload on my Windows 7 and I even used the "ethtool" to disable it on my linux. But I still cannot SSH or telnet.

I used the sniffer that comes with VMware. Please see the 2 files attached for SSH and telnet packets.

I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

White screen on browser when connecting to remote WS10 remote session

I am trying to get the remote feature to work so I can do some offsite work later today.  I have the guest installed as a shared VM.  When I point my browser to my host PC https://mymachinename it loads a white screen in firefox.  In IE it shows an error "this page requires you to login."  But I never see any login page!

Anyone have a fix or workaround for this?

Unity Program Menus disappear - Workstation 10.0.2 build-1744117 OpenSuse 13.1 Host Win7 pro x86 SP1 VM

Hi All,

Apologies if this has been covered, I am so far unable to find anything similar for version 10 of Workstation, the only close hit I found was: Re: Unity Application Menu Missing

My problem is that when I use Unity mode the menus from programs or simple right click context menus appear briefly then go transparent (See attached)

The menu still operates but you have to fluke the correct item to click on :/

This issue is not apparent in standard mode, only seen when using unity mode.

System details:

HOST

OpenSuse 13.1 x64 clean install

Linux 3.11.10-11-desktop

fully updated, tested on official and Packman repos.

KDE 4.11.5

X 11,403,901

Intel i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz

16GB RAM

Samsung SSD 840 EVO 256GB

ATI Radeon HD 7700 (fglrx64_xpic_SUSE131 Driver) fault also seen on default driver.

3 x monitors all native 1920 x 1080 (2 x DVI & 1 x DP to DVI active adapter)

VMWare Worstation 10.0.2 build-1744117

VM

Windows 7 PRO SP1 x86

Hardware acceleration off

Fully updated

VMware Tools installed

Fault visible in all apps tested so far: Explorer, Lotus notes, Chrome, Skype.

Please let me know what other info is needed, I am sure there are logs etc but I don't know where they are. First time using OpenSUSE and Workstation but other than this issue its been great

Cheers

Sam

Using swap too early

Hi all,

I espacially setup my laptop with "plenty" of RAM in order to be able to run "many" virtual machines at the same time.

I'm about 16GB RAM, with SSD hard drive, i7 CPU.

Running Linux (either Fedora or Archlinux), I setup Workstation 10 to use the maximum of RAM (the setting slider allows up to 14GB).

But, when I begin launching all my VMs, Workstation seems to allocate swap although the main RAM is not fully used.

How to make Workstation using real RAM first and then may be use swap if not enough?

Workstation 7 vs Workstation 10 on a win8.1 system

I'm running windows 8.1 on a retina MacBook Pro with 16GB of ram. I've downloaded version 7 (which I currently have a license for) and I'll be looking to create a couple of VMs. I'm wondering given the promotion that VMware is running if its worth upgrading to 10?  I see the features that it adds vs. version 8 and 9 but not 7 (I guess my version is getting long in the tooth).

Is version 10 worth the upgrade as I'm on win8.1?  How stable is 7 on windows 8.1?  I'll be playing either version 10 or 7 tonight.

Also I'm planning on using this on a Surface Pro 3 once my order ships.

That's basically a Haswell Dual core 1.9 GHz  Intel Core i5-4300U computer with 8 GB of storage.  Any idea how well that will perform.  I'm rocking right now with a quad core i7 (Ivy Bridge).

Thanks in advance.

Mike

VMWARE Workstation 10 performance

Hi all,

I am planning to buy a dell machine with the following configuration.

Intel core i3-4130 dual core 3.4GHZ processor (4Th Generation)

16GB of DDR3 RAM

500GB of SATA HDD

I'll be using this machine to run 5 Linux virtual instances. Each instance will be assigned with 3GB of memory. If all the instances are accessed over network (using connect to server option) at once, will i face any performance related issues? I believe that processor usage will be less to run the applications in VMWARE. It uses more memory. Please guide me if I am wrong.

Thanks in Advance.

Ubuntu 'Invalid magic number' / 'Exec format error' after sudden shutdown

$

Hello, community!

Here's my story:

01. Windows 7 host + VMware 6 player + Ubuntu inside.

02. Put Windows into sleep mode.

03. Power cord jumped out of the socket.

04. Windows boot.

05. chkdsk C: /f

06. 'Invalid magic number' message when loading Ubuntu under VMware.

07. Boot other x86 system with virtual drive with subject Ubuntu attached.

08. fsck.ext4 -f /dev/sdb1 && mkdir /tmp/sdb1 && mount -t ext4 /dev/sdb1 /tmp/sdb1 && chroot /tmp/sdb1

09. 'Exec format error' - OK, really, it was x64 system!

10. Boot other x64 system with virtual drive with subject Ubuntu attached.

11. fsck.ext4 -f /dev/sdb1 && mkdir /tmp/sdb1 && mount -t ext4 /dev/sdb1 /tmp/sdb1 && chroot /tmp/sdb1

12. 'Exec format error' - well, that's weird!

So, can anybody (try) to:

01. Explain what could happen.

02. What to do to reanimate my system. I'm missing it!

Thanks in advance

Requirements for 64-bit guest

I'm running 32-bit Windows 7 on a 64-bit HP NC6400 computer (whose process is 64-bit, according to the specs). This will be the host OS. The test that I download from VMware KB: Hardware and firmware requirements for 64-bit guest operating systems tells me that I can't run a 64-bit guest on this computer. But does that check fail because of the 32-bit operating system that's installed? Would it help if I install a 64-bit operating system on the host instead?
