How do I create a Virtual Appliance

Hi,

Can I create a virtual appliance using Workstation 10 - is it the right tool?

If it is not the right tool, what is the right tool and how much does it cost?

Thanks

Jason

Can I get alternative virtual devices?

Hi,

Can I get virtual devices for Workstation 10 other than the ones that come with it? Would they appear in the list of devices?

I'd like to look into other network and sound cards.

Thanks

Jason

Is it possible to get a virtual Android device?

Hi,

I have seen that there is a community version of Android which runs with VMWare software. However, is it possible to get a version that is modified to reflect a particular device. I am having problems with some Android software on a device and I'd like to see if I can replicate it virtually. As the software is not mine, I am not sure how I will install it onto a virtual device but that is another problem.

Thanks

Jason

Dual / split screen after Ubuntu Linux kernel update to 3.2.0-64-generic

$

Hi everyone,

Scenario:

HOST: VMware Workstation 10.0.2 build-1744117 on a physical host running Kubuntu Linux 12.04.4 LTS, Precise Pangolin, completely updated to this date (June 07th), kernel 3.2.0-64-generic #97-Ubuntu SMP  Wed Jun 4 22:04:21 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux.  Host was rebooted after last update; operating fully, no problems.

VIRTUAL MACHINE: VM runs Kubuntu 12.04.4 LTS, Precise Pangolin. Desktop: KDE. It was working normally until this morning; previous update a few days ago.

VMware-tools updated to the latest version.

This morning, I updated this VM; previous kernel was 3.2.0-63; after update it became 3.2.0-64. The only updates available today were: the kernel, and OpenSSL. Nothing else was updated.

After the update, I rebooted and ran vmware-tools-config.pl.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE KERNEL UPDATE?:

Now, the VM screen is split in two halves. Whatever I open on the left-hand side (say, a console) is mirrored on the right-hand side as a "phantom" image. If I move the cursor over the right side, icons that were hidden by the phantom-copy will show through. This makes using the VM almost impossible, with several windows and applications.

vmwkst-issue-1.png

1. I ran vmware-tools-config  and rebooted the VM: no effect.

2. I resized the VM window; maximized and clicked back to normal size; changed wallpapers and themes; to no avail.

3. I did the same steps on another host with VMware Workstation, and exactly the same problem happened to the VM there. Same mirrored / split screen.

4. Updates applied to several physical hosts (with reboots) caused no problems to them.   Only VMs are affected.

Is this a problem with the virtual graphics controller in the VMware Workstation?

For now, I switched back to the previous snapshot and it is working normally. I cannot update the kernel, though.

Any help will be appreciated.

VMWare Workstation 10 - slow load before "boot" starts

Hello,

I upgraded from v8 to v9 and then v10.0.1. Every time the loading time of virtual machine is slower.

From 15sec in v8 it goes to 50sec in v10.

So it is normal? the longest time is a black screen even before a boot or starting process of virtual OS begins.

During than "before" booting time CPU goes up (1 core goes to 100%), but HDD is fine.

XBOX One controller does not work

Hi,

Under Workstation 10.0.2, I installed the newly released XBOX One controller driver on my Win 8.1 Guest OS. However, when I connect it to USB, I hear the host OS and guest both recognize  it but it gets no power. If I disable it on the host PC, it does not work at all.

When I click on the VM USB icon, and select "disconnect from HOST" it gives an error message saying that I should contact vmware it as cannot connect to device 'null'.

Of course if I shut down vmware machine it perfeclty works on the host.

Well, guys please fix this.

Thanks,

VMWare Workstation 10 - Bridged connection won't allow connections outside local network

$

Hi everyone,

I just upgraded from VirtualBox to Workstation v10.0.2 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit as a host. For some reason on any of my guest OSs (Windows 8, Windows 7, Ubuntu 14.04) when using a Bridged connection, I cannot connect to anything (HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc) outside of my local network (except ping). It works fine when using a NAT adapter, but I need to be able to use Bridged so other services can login to the VM.

I have followed instructions from a lot of people who are having similar issues (uninstall/reinstall adapters, reconfigure the virtual networks, etc.) but none seem to work for me. Also none of the other threads I read did they mention they had local network access, just not external. It's strange that HTTP and SSH fail for external connections, but I have no problem pinging a site like Google or Yahoo. I get replies like I would expect. However when HTTP to Google I get a 'This page cannot be displayed' error in the guest OS.

My router is a Netgear N900 router, and I can't see anything in its settings where it is blocking external traffic. I switched routers, and I still have the same problem.

I never had this problem with VirtualBox. I'm switching to VMWare Workstation from VBox, but hit this roadblock unfortunately.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Continuing USB problems

I'm running the latest version of Workstation 10 on Windows 8.1. When I plug a USB device into the laptop, I get a message asking if I want to connect it to the running guest OS. When I reply "Yes", I get a message saying the device will be unplugged from the host. After that, nothing happens. The guest (whatever OS I'm running as guest -- it doesn't matter) doesn't receive the USB device, and when I click VM->Removable Devices I'm still offered the opportunity to connect the USB device to the guest (as if disconnection from the host never took place). I've read as many posts on this forum as I can find about the problem. I've done all the updating of my Microsoft USB drivers, I've unplugged all other USB devices, I've avoided using a USB hub, I've used my USB 2.0 ports instead of my USB 3.0 port, and nothing seems to work. Is there any way to diagnose this problem?

The file specified is not a virtual disk, Sorry to repeat myself but I already looked.. Hope you could help me :)

Ubuntu 12.04 VM stuch at boot screen, any chance of recovery?

$

I'm running Workstation 10.1 with an Ubuntu 12.04 X64 guest OS. I installed some driver updates that required reboot and now I am hanging at the boot screen. The log file shows errors, the last of which is I120: File: CreateFileDirectoryRetry: Non-retriable error encountered (D:\ProgramData\VMWare\):Cannot create a file when that file already exists (183).  I'm looking for suggestions to try and recover this VM before starting from scratch again (I know I should have created a snapshot or earlier backup but alas I was remiss in not doing so!). Again any help or suggestions would be welcome since the recreation process would be rather long :-(

Update: I read there is a recovery mode for Ubuntu -

How To Reset Lost User Account Password For Ubuntu:

If you forget your password and cannot use another account to login and change it you can do the following instead.

  1. Boot up & after bios but before bootloader hold down shift
  2. Choose entry that says recovery mode and hit enter (Sometimes this entry is under Advanced Boot Options)
  3. Scroll down to root and hit enter
  4. type: mount -rw -o remount /
  5. type: passwd username

replace "username" with the name of the account you are trying to change the password for.

  1. You will be prompted to enter a new password, do so, and then you will be asked for it again so type it again.
  2. Type: halt -p

This will shut down your computer, then reboot and login

Wondering if there is a way to boot into the Ubuntu recovery when booting from Workstation 10?

Thanks,

-Scott

I am having VMWare workstation 10.0.2. I was using OSX Mountain Lion VM. I download Mavericks from App store and upgraded my Mountain Lion VM to Mavericks. After intial run of mavericks setup, it was saying that it will restart automatically. And it did so, it restarted VM after doing initial file extraction or whatever process of installation it was doing. As soon as it restarted, after restarted, my VM stucks at apple grey bootscreen and does nothing, it does not proceeed further. I am having windows 8.1 as host, so i checked the task manager, the vmware was showing no activity in windows task manager, it was showing as idle and was not taking any memory or disk processing.  I have searched so much on google and blogs for the solution but no luck.

I am having very much important data in that Virtual Machine. Please any expert help me. Please. I ll be grateful.

Bug report: VMWare tools stop working when detaching and attaching network adapter

I'm not sure if this is the place for this if you want to report a bug and you are not the owner of the licenses but you are working for someone who owns the license and provides you access to the workstations.

These are the steps to reproduce the bug:

1. Create WinXP virtual machine.

2. Install VMWare tools.

3. Woth virtual machine powered on, go to settings, detach network adapter, attach new network adapter.

4. VMWare tools features like clipboard sharing or file drag and drop stop working

Hi,

At the moment all my VM's won't start.

VMPlayer seems to be looking for C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Workstation\config.ini. But I never used Workstation, and that file is not on my drive.

I think this happened after my host PC went to sleep mode. (Not sure though)

Any help at resolving this issue is much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Pim

Suggestions on creating an OVF export in Virtual Box that works in BOTH VMWare Workstation and VMWare ESXi 5.x

Hello,

I just went through an unpleasant experience with a customer where an OVF 1.0 I exported from Virtual Box 4.3.12 was successfully imported into VMWare Fusion 5.x and VMWare Fusion 6.x and VMWare Workstation 10.0.2/Preview 2014 but failed miserably when we attempted to use the VM in VMWare ESXi 5.x.The customer uses ESXi.

For both VMWare Workstation and VMWare Fusion, when you first try to bring in the OVF, you do get the below Dialog and when you click the Retry button, everything imports fine.

However, there appears to be no equivalent option in VMWare ESXi which complains the OVF hardware is incompatible and halts at that step. Ideally, Virtual Box would export an OVF that worked across systems, of course.

Anyway, is there a solution to import the same OVF into ESXi as we did with VMWare Workstation and VMWare Fusion or is it a lost cause? (I know next to nothing on ESXi).

Thanks,

Alan
