Vmware Workstation 10.0.1 and Centos 6.5 guest

$

I just installed Vmware Workstation 10.0.1 with the intention of standing up a new Centos 6.5 x64 vm.

Everytime after the install occurs and reboots for the first time, it immediately crashes with the error:

"Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)"

It appears to be the related to the issue inVMware Workstation-10.0.1 fails after RedHat-6 software update.

however the workarounds in that thread dont work on a fresh install.

Any ideas appreciated.

Bug that destroyed my VM and replaced it by another one

I encountered a bug a few minutes ago.

I'm working under a W8.1 x64, the VM was Ubuntu 14.04. VMWare Workstation 10.0.3 build-1895310

I was installing a package (Meteor.js using curl) in the VM, at the same time I copied some files from my host OS (W8.1). When I pressed ctrl+c I got a message: "VMware workstation stopped running...". I closed the message and VMWare shutdowned.

I restarted VMWare but I got the message "This VM has been moved or copied, if you don't know press copied", so I pressed "copied".

I opened VMWare but all my VMs were gone, I had to search for them into the hard drive, I usually have the tabs pre-opened, they were all closed.

I tried to start the VM but impossible: Not enough RAM. (I have 16Go, my VM was configured to use 6Go)

Okay, something went wrong and some of the RAM is still in use somehow. I shutdowned the computer and restarted.

I tried to run my VM again, ok, it worked. But what is IN the VM is completely different. It is not what was the VM before the crash but a copy of another VM I had on the same drive, in a different folder.

After a few doubt, I checked both VM and they are exactly the same, I know for sure they were quite different.

I lost all my data and configuration, I don't have any snapshot of the lost VM, I don't know if there is a way to rollback.

Do you?

is it possible that an application in vm is faster than in its host?

$

To measure our software’s performance on vmware, we compare the vm performance against that of its host machine.

We found out that the performance on three different machines showed very different behavior, from 50% slower to 10% slower.

And the strangest thing is that there is one machine, its vm is faster than its host.

Any help on the possible reasons is appreciated!

Thanks!

Additional information:

Ubuntu 14.04 Host with Win 8.1 Guest - Can't full screen

Just installed WS10.0.3 on Ubuntu 14.04 and built a Win8.1 guest. It has tools installed and works great so far, however when I click fullscreen, the window completely disappears. It can be recovered by lauching the WS interface from the tray icon, but it never seams able to go full screen.

I have dual monitors, but I'm only trying to launch it FS in one. I've already tried limiting the monitors to one in the settings and have also played with the resolutions with no effect.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks,

Not able to add esxi to Vcenter appliance server

Hello Everyone,

I am facing weird Issue in my lab environment.. I have created two ESX servers esx1(192.168.111.130) and esx2(192.168.111.131) on VMware workstation which is running on Window 7.

I am able to connect to these two esxi servers with help of C# client.

Now I have installed VCenter appliance as VM on esx1. IP of Vcenter appliance server is 192.168.111.128

Now after doing configuring part of appliance server when I connect to appliance server through C# client. I am able to add the esx1 host but not esx2.

esx2 is not pingable from appliance server.

esx1 and esx2 are pingable to each other.

esx1 , esx2 and appliance server are pingable from my Window machine on which I have installed VMware Workstation to set up this environment.

I have rebooted esx2 couple of times and change the IP as well from 192.168.111.131 to 192.168.111.132, but no luck

Any help on the above issue is highly appreciated.

Thanks

i just installed the new release of player 6.0.3 on a newly installed linux mint 17 (64bit) with xfce desktop installation (as opposed to cinnamon) for the first time. the problem is that part (not all) the menu headers are missing from the player main window. the sub menus are there if i click on the spot where they should be and all works well after that. the virtual machine seems to work ok too, just the main window seems to have this issue.i don't recall having this issue on linux mint 16 with cinnamon desktop. see attachment.

does anyone know if this an issue with xfce or player?

Shared folder corruption in Workstation 10

$

I'm running VMWare Workstation 10.0.3 build-1895310 on Windows 7 x64 host.  I have a Windows 7 x64 guest with VMWare tools 9.2.4 build-1398046. It has a shared folder configuration with a folder that is read-only and contains installation files on the host. The shared folder was opened in the guest. In other words the explorer window was open and I could see the list of files in the folder. I realized a program I use that was in the shared folder, Fiddler, had a newer version released so I downloaded it on the host and copied it to the same folder on the host that is also the shared read-only folder on the guest. This consisted of two files, the fiddler installation exe and a copy of the fiddler.exe with a modified icon. These files already existed in the folder so I chose to overwrite them with the newer versions. Then in the guest I tried to install and the installer told me it failed an integrity check. I tested on the host and the installer was fine. So I tried again in the guest and the installer worked that time. After the installation finished in the guest I copied the fiddler.exe with the modified icon (again in the shared read-only folder) to the Fiddler program files directory on the guest. When I tried to start it, it gave me some weird application error. I realized maybe this file was corrupt too. So I went in a hex editor and checked the fiddler.exe in the shared read-only folder on the guest to the fiddler.exe on the host, in the same folder. In other words I compared the same file. I found a difference in the files, the corrupt file ended in all zero data where the other file had actual data. Both files were the same size.

I've actually had this problem once or twice in the past, I probably have posted about it or reported it to support. It must have been a long time ago, years ago, because I only vaguely remember it.

The file size is 1016584 and the position where the zeroing starts in the corrupt version is 1009416. Interestingly the old Fiddler.exe that was in the folder before I overwrote it was 1009416 bytes. I've attached both files to this post. Hopefully this information will help you solve the bug. Thanks

How to diagnosis network permission and access issues.

I have a Windows XP machine I'm looking to virtualize.

I can ping the machine, I can log in with remote desktop, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out why on my Windows 8.1 machine I cannot access the admin$ share.

I followed the instructions, I turned off Simple File Sharing. I verified the username is correct,

I know the username and password and I type in the machine name and the IP address 192.168.1.171\myadmin or computername\myadmin

How do I troubleshoot this?

Getting two beeps when starting a VM -- cause for concern?

$

Hey everyone.

Background info:

Running Workstation 10.0 and my VM is Windows 2012 with SQL server backend.

Recently (as of in the last week), I noticed that when i turn on this particular VM in my lab, i get two beeps, but the VM boots fine. No idea why it started. If you had to ask me what changed, nothing has. The only thing I can think of is that there is a new update available that I have not done yet and "maybe" it started after that (grasping here.)

I have done some digging around, but have not found anything concrete on what it could be. Did find a few other threads out there that talk about editing the .vmx file and putting a specific line to true:

Re: How to disable system beep on vm startup?

Two questions on that.

1.) Do these new beeps represent a problem with my VM? That is my biggest concern right now as it is the workhorse in my lab. The VM boots fine, works fine it is just those beeps.

2.) I dont have that particular line in my .vmx file, unless I completely missed it.

Any thoughts?

I appreciate it.

Cheers,

Linked clone question

Hello,

On WS 9, created a Vm, then a snapshot, then created 2 linked clones - LC1 and LC2. Then enabled template mode on parent.

Can I run both linked clones at the same time or am I limited to running only ONE at a time?

Also, how is memory allocated to the linked clones? I chose 4GB for parent clone and 4GB for each linked clone when they were created. Does that mean that each linked clone would use - 4GB (parent) + 4GB (clone) OR is it that all 3 VMs - parent, LC1 and LC2 would each use 4GB of RAM when open?

Thanks for your assistance.

Error reading the Autologin state: Internal error.

I'm running VMWare Workstation 10.0.3 build-1895310 on Windows 7 x64 host. I received some VMWare message box popups on the host saying "Error reading the Autologin state: Internal error.". This was few minutes after I saved a snapshot of a Windows 8 x64 guest. I don't know if that's related. I had several guests running at the time. Does anyone know what that message means?

Feature request regarding floppy ...

$

I have created some linux vms during the weekend and noticed I should disable floppy in BIOS to avoid fd0 errors during boot and later. However in the workstation GUI is no floppy configured. So I would think that for "transparence" it would be nicer to have a floppy in the BIOS if I have a floppy configured in GUI settings and if there's no floppy in GUI settings there's no entry in BIOS (disabled).

It would break "on the fly" connection of a floppy in a running vm but when do I had the last time used a floppy or an image?

Just my 2 cents

Networking Question

I have Windows Server 2012 R2 connected to a few clients within a private network, however I would like all machines to be able to access the internet (which they are currently unable to do as they are in the private network), but I don't want to attach another NIC to each machine. Is there any way I can do this or would I just have to attach another NIC to each machine?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there

Please could someone help me. I have been receiving this error (see below) all day.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vmui)

NOT_IMPLEMENTED

d:/build/ob/bora-1410761/bora/lib/disklib/sparsechecked.c:1634

A log file is available in "C:\Users\dan-smith\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware-daniel.alvares\vmware-ui-2996.log".

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware support, choose "Collect Support Data" from the

Help menu.

You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has always worked fine.

I switched off my PC on Friday and when I switched it on this morning, i could not turn on my VM

What I've tried:

  • Disabling Symantec endpoint protection
  • Powering on VM whilst in Windows Safe Mode
  • Moved all other files in folder into "temp" folder (so it was only the .vmx & .vmdk files)
  • Removed all files (preferences & inventory) from "C:\Users\Dani.Smith\AppData\Roaming\VMware\" folder
  • Check the VM folder wasn't somehow read-only

But nothing has worked

Please can help me with this matter

Any input is appreciated

Many Thanks

Dan

Hello,

VIX API VixVM_PowerOn does not work on VMware Workstation 10 after upgrading from version 9 and no virtual machines could be started with VMware VIX API.

There is no vmware log file created. But I found a vmware-vix-14996.log in the temp folder.

Here is a portion of this vix log file:

Do you have any idea or clue on what may be the root of the problem?

Connecting to vCenter from Workstation 9 Linux

$

I am attempting to connect to a vCenter server from my linux host using VMWare workstation 9. Every time I attempt the connection, it simply hangs at the login box. I get no response at all once I get past the certificate prompt. From watching tcpdump, it looks like an initial connection is made, then the server responds with a FIN and no more traffic is passed. All I have is a grayed out "Connect to Server" box. I've seen this behavior in Fedora 18, Ubuntu 12.04, and CentOS 6.4.

Has anybody else seen this? I'm wondering if there is some pre-requisite that I may be missing. The Windows clients can connect just fine.

Thanks for any help!

Hello Everyone!

I have a big problem with my Virtual machine. I'm not able to start it anymore. The Virtual machine contains important files I need to restore if possible.

After I start the virtual machine, it says:
