I'm having a problem with the stretch guest display option not being available for my Windows 7 VM as well as a few Windows 10 VMs. However, it appears to be available with a Windows Vista VM as well as a Windows XP VM. My question is this: Is this a bug or by design? I really don't want to have to use my Win7 or Win10 VMs as "centered (with borders - no resolution change)" The display elements are incredibly small in that mode and the other mode is not appropriate either due to some older applications that don't scale properly and do not function well with windows 10.
If this is not a bug, then how do I enable stretching for said VMs? Any help would be appreciated.
I just installed Workstation Player and was given a Windows 8 VM.
I've looked at YouTube, Help, Reddit, you name it and there's no settings I've made that can allow the VM to display 2160 x 1440.
Everything is up to date, VM tools installed, Windows Updated, newest Workstation Player etc.
What's a proven way to make this work?
After upgrading to from VMWare Workstation 14 to 15, the shared folders are not available as mounts in linux guests, even when they show as enabled on the host. I even tried disabling them and re-enabling them, thinking it might need a refresh, to no avail. Virtual hardware on the linux guests has been upgraded to 15 as well.
Both guests are running Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS with the latest open-vm-tools (last updated 9/27/2018).
I have a 14.1.3 version of VMware i can `t see wifi adaptor on the virtual machine, i installed driver on windows Virtual machine but the driver don`t find any wifi adaptor (ethernet works)
Host - openSUSE 15.0
guest - any
VMware W/S Linux 14.1.2
This was not an issue on openSUSE Leap 42.3 but I have upgraded to openSUSE 15.0
All is working ok when I start and load VMs but when I try to install VMWare tools, the download begins, asks for root privileges which are given but then fails with the error
"There was a problem updating a software component. Try again later and if the problem persists, contact VMware Support or your system administrator."
Nothing about vmware tools in the log at this point.
Other than tools, everything else is working.

Hello,
I know that it is easy possible to transfer clipboard content to guest OS, when guest Windows (or VM Tools) are ready booted.
But I want to do the following:
On some machines I have a pre-boot password. Is there any possibility to send the text of the clipboard to the guest VM as keystrokes?
I know, that it is not to advice to copy / paste passwords, but these are test machines and I don't want to enter that long password everytime manually.
So is there a way to send the text of the host clipboard to the guest VM at a point of time where VM Tools are not loaded? Any special key combination?
Moin. in the new version workstation,
in the new version Workstation Pro version 15.x I observe an abnormal behavior of the VMs.
The respective VM, or the contained machine becomes briefly black and returns afterwards again. The process takes about 1.5 to 2 seconds and is repeated at different intervals.
Here must be urgently repaired.
Host:
Windows 10 64bit v.1803
Nvidia Geforce 980

Unable to connect any USB device to VM's. Host running windows 10. Host can connect to USB devices but VM's report USB not recognize and the message "The device '*' was unable to connect to its ideal host controller. An attempt will be made to connect this device to the best available host controller” Running Workstation 12.5.9 (VM win7/win2018). Any suggestions.
Hi,
I made a mistake that overwriting my codes by using "tar -xvf". This is the first valid disk I/O operation when I launch the OS (CentOS) today, I think. (Other operations include "ls", "diff", etc.)
I found following files under my vmware maching installing directory:
CentOS xxx-0-flat.vmdk
CentOS xxx-0.vmdk
CentOS xxx-000004.vmdk
xxxxx.vmem.
And the first file's modification date is before my change, while the other three seems later than it.
So is there any way to rollback to the previous status that before my change?
Like backup CenOS xxx-0-flat.vmdk, shutdown the OS, and restore the CenOS xxx-0-flat.vmdk?
Or just remove the last there files?
Many thanks for you help !

I have a GTS250 card (old I know), under WS14 my VM's are enabled for 3D acceleration and when VMs start there are no error messages. If I upgrade to WS15 the same VM now gets error messages that there is no 3D acceleration enabled in the host. If I uninstall WS15 and reinstall WS14 then that exact same VM starts up without any 3D acceleration error messages. Whats changed in WS15 that now results in my acceleration no longer working? If I look at the specs pages both say they need DX10.1 but obviously that can not be the case because WS14 works and WS15 doesn't. Any idea's?
Hello,
I am using VMWare Workstation Pro 15.0 running under Linux (openSUSE Leap 42.2 / openSuse Leap 15.0) host systems.
I use VMWare to run a Windows 7 guest system in order to use some of those (rare) Windows applications, where there is no Linux alternative alternative yet.
When finished with the Windows guest, I normally don't log off from Windows, I simply suspend the guest system.I resume the guest again, as soon as I need one of those Windows applications.
So far so good: Everything works fine.
However I have a minor problem with the size of the guest window upon startup of the guest.
I would like the guest to start with a window size, which is exactly the size of the guests window as I suspended it before.
The expected behaviour happens sometimes, but mostly the guest comes up with a window width of about 1/3 of the prevously suspended system's width. If that happens, I have to resize the guest to the size wanted. That's easy, but I have to do so quite often.
I use VMWare Workstation Pro for many years already and on every new version I hope, that I don't have to resize the guest any more. Until now it remained a hope only.
My question: Is there a parameter I can change in order to avoid the window resizing upon resume of the guest?
I am searching for the ‚Lockout-Feature‘, which was already there in the version 3.5 and 5.5.. Because in the newest versions 14 and 15 I can’t find it.
We needed this feature because we are using notebooks on montage, so the employees can only connect to locally VMs. Now it is possible that every employee create their own new VMs, but this we doesn't want.
I have already found two discussions that I think discuss the same topic, but there is no solution in the papers that matches my ideas. The two discussions are:
- Administrative Lockout – Workstation 9, from 13.03.2013
- Protect Settings “Lockout Feature”, from 31.01.2012
Now the question, do anyone knows, where I can find this function? The picture below shows the function, which I searched (Workstation 5.5).
Thank you for your help in advance and greetings

I was running the latest version of Workstation 14 and upgraded to 15. Before the update, both starting the Virtual Network Editor via GUI and running vmware-netcfg as root on the command line worked properly. Now nothing happens when starting via GUI, and this is printed on the command line:
root@pc-tb-debian ➜ ~ vmware-netcfg
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::property_tree::json_parser::json_parser_error> >'
what(): <unspecified file>: ptree contains data that cannot be represented in JSON format
I have already removed /etc/vmware/networking and reinstalled VMware Workstation 15, so basically I am running the default network config.
Any Ideas?
Just upgraded to 15.0.0 from 14. I can not clone or upgrade machines (selecting full clone). I get a parameter incorrect error.
This is major.
When I used WS14 Player and Window 10 with an Ubuntu virtual machine, evrything works fine.
I could resize the Player window and Ubuntu got the new resoltuion from the new window size.
But now I have upgraded to WS15 Pro and when I want to resize the VmWare Window the Ubuntu resultion is not adapted.
It still remains with the old resolution.
The autoconnection of USB devices is no longer working in VMware 15 for me.
In the config file there is a record:
usb.autoConnect.device0 = "path:1/3/0/1 autoclean:1"
but in the log file I see
USB: Skiping autoconnect in WS, using askconnect
In the log file from version 14 there was a record that the connection was successful.
Cofig file is the same, no changes.
Can anyone help or try if the autoconnect works in your case.
