VMware Workstation 14 random freeze couple of minutes

$

Hello,

I'm using VMware Workstation a lot on my company laptop (Dell Precision M4800 i7-4810MQ 2.80GHz with 32GB RAM running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64) for several job activities.

At some point I had VMware Workstation 12 running and using several VM's I noticed at random moments a total freeze of the whole VMware Workstation application causing all the running VM's to freeze as well. This freeze lasted for a couple of minutes and after that everything was running fine again (host + VM's). I have looked into several eventlog files, but I couldn't find any entries indicating somehow into the direction of this freezes. The freezing could happen a couple of times a day and sometimes the days go by without any freeze, so it's completely random.

Early this year my VMware Workstation was upgraded to version 14. I did hope this upgrade should fix my random freezing issue, but unfortunately it did not, the freezes are still showing up randomly

I did check this with our global IT department, but until now they don't have any idea what can be done about this freezing issue, as it seems I'm the only person who complains about this issue.

So now I'm trying to get some information using the VMware community hoping there is someone else facing the same issue or maybe know something about it, maybe this way I get more ways to troubleshoot my issue.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

After Creators Update Windows 10 host-only network sharing stopped working

After upgrade to Windows 10 Creators Update 1703 on the host, guests can no longer access host's network shares using SMB network protocol through host-only or NAT IPs.

[TLDR - steps to try to reproduce this -> Access local host network shares using IP address of the VMNet interfaces from either host or guest OS]

This was working ok on previous Win10 version 1607.

VMware Workstation version is 12.5.7 build-5813279 (upgraded from 12.5.6 after Win10 went from 1607 to 1703 few days ago)

After some troubleshooting, it appears that host server is not listening for incoming connections on ports 137,138 UDP and TCP 139 using IP addresses of the VMNet1 (host only) and VMNet8 (NAT) networks.

It's only listening on IP address of Ethernet/LAN/Physical interface.

Assuming 192.168.1.10 is host's Ethernet connection and 192.168.5.1 and 192.168.123.1 are host's VMNet1 and VMNet8 IP addresses respectively, trying to show network shares (either from host cmd prompt, or from guest gives the same result):

> net view \\192.168.1.10

shows host shares, while:

> net view \\192.168.5.1

gives error:

System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

Listing open (LISTEN) ports on the host is only showing binding to Ethernet IP address, and not VMNet* addresses

> netstat -an |findstr ":139"

  TCP    192.168.1.10:139       0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING

Testing on another computer that still has not been upgraded to Creators Update and all is well there, host is listening for and accepting network traffic on Ethernet and on VMNet* IP addresses, and guests can access host's shares.

Things I have tried already:

- windows firewall on host appears to be configured correctly and ping host from guest is working
- checked that all 4 vmware autostart services are running

- restored defaults in Virtual Network Editor

- restarted win10 several times after installing latest workstation version

- disabled and enabled VMware Virtual Ethernet adapters several times

None of this has helped so far.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

VMWare Horizon Client - Arch Linux

I know Arch Linux is not an officially supported distro but I would greatly appreciate your support. I have a tower and a laptop both running Arch linux rolling release. I have VMWare Horizon Client 4.9.0 on both. I have problems using the windows key and the alt key in the guest operating system. My tower works as expected, both the start key and the windows keys are ONLY relayed to the guest. I need to hover at the top and minimize the client to go back to my host. However, in my Dell Latitude, alt and windows keys are relayed to the host, i.e. I cannot do an alt-tab in my guest at all! What would be the cause? Both my devices run the same operating system but it works on one but not in the other.

PS: I have tried using an external keyboard, same behavior

Workstation 15 (vmx-16) OVAs Importing as Workstation 14 (vmx-14) Hardware Version

I am testing out v15.0.0 build-10134415 on Windows 10. I found that if I create a VM, and export it to as an OVA or OVF, then re-import it, Workstation 15 tells me that the VM has a compatibility of Workstation 14, and I need to upgrade it before it reads compatibility of Workstation 15. When I manually analyze the OVF file, it reads vmx-16 as the compatibility version, which is for Workstation 15.

This seems like a defect in Workstation 15. If so, is there a fast way to have a developer notified?

Computer freezes frequently while using VMware Workstation

Hello,

My computer running WIndows freezes while using VMware Workstation several times per hour for a duration between 20 and 60 seconds each time; which is making work quite frustrating.

From the log file, the freezing coincides with the following entries:

Could you please suggest something to get rid of the problem?

How to run Live CD from VMware workstation 14

$

Is it possible to run Live CD like Tails, Kali Linux,TENS etc with Vmware work station 14? I want to run the VM directly from the CD / DVD without installing it.

I want to have the VM run with NAT network option. This way I can run my VPN software on my host and then start the Live CD / DVD on vmware, so that all the network connections from the LIVE CD VM would be encrypted. Is this possible?

Appreciate any help...

Hi,

I have a problem. I just converted my physical machine (lenovo Laptop, windows 8.1), with the vmware vcenter converter standalone. Everything worked fine, no problems, no errors.

But when I want to open the file in vmware on my Ubtunu machine (a.t.m. dual-boot with win8 on the same laptop), after a while it returns the error:

Failed to lock the file

Cannot open the disk '/media/remy/WD My Book/Laptop-Remy/Laptop-Remy.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

Module DiskEarly power on failed.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

I don't know if has to do with Ubutntu (version 13.04), or with vmware workstation (10.0)

I hope some can help.

thanks in advantage,

Vmware workstation distortion across multiple monitors

$

I have three monitors and never had trouble with this before. My main monitor, it looks fine as shown until you notice some icons missing towards the top. If I were to click these icons, vmware workstation will crash after a 2-3 second pause and all the vm tabs will be deleted. When I drag the workstation across my other two monitors (on the left and right side), the workstation itself is distorted. Let me be clear, this is not the VM itself, but the workstation's interface. I haven't played with VMware in about a week but the last major update I did was update my graphics card (and maybe some windows updates) but I did roll back to the previous version of my nvidia graphics card and still no fix. I also updated to Vmware workstation 15 but that didn't change anything either. Any suggestions? I'm going to try rolling back some more to keep testing things out. Also, the VMs themselves will load but as shown, they become just as distorted.

*note* I have to roll back to vmware 14 to show different errors and I will upload the picture when I do so

Edit:

1) I've also tried using vmware workstation's "repair" utility to no avail.

2) I am on a windows 10 system

3) Added the workstation 14 version. The "middle", "left", and "Right" pictures are workstation 15 while the "workstation 14, middle" is the only workstation 14 as I had to quickly rollback and the visuals are the same for both versions.

Thank you!

bridged network causes host problems

$

I'm using Workstation Pro 14.

When I configure my vm image for bridged networking so it is exposed for other machines on my network, it causes problems for my host's network access.  For example...

  • my host's Outlook connection to a remote exchange server dies and cannot be recovered
  • my Remote Desktop session to another host dies and cannot be re-initiated

When I reconfigure the vm networking back to NAT (sharing host IP), all is well with my host networking, but other hosts on the network cannot access the VM

Is there a solution that allows access to the image from other hosts on my network without causing problems for my host's network access?

Simple question about memory reservation

$

Will VMWare Workstation Pro allow me to allocate more memory to virtual machines (powered on simultaneously) than the host can provide, assuming that not all of the RAM will be required at the same time?

For example, will VMWare Workstation Pro allow me to power on all of the following machines?

  • 1x VM using 1 CPU, 16 GB RAM
  • 2x VM using 1 CPU, 32 GB RAM

Assuming host specs of 4 CPUs and 64 GB RAM.

I am familiar with type-1 hypervisors (vSphere) where I can over-allocate RAM as long as total RAM consumption does not exceed the host's total physical RAM.

And the same question for CPUs...  what happens if I try to allocate more CPUs than are available?  If my machine only has 4 CPUs, does that mean I can only run a maximum of 3 VMs simultaneously with a maximum of 1 CPU per VM?

Thank you

No network interface in CentOS guest for NAT adapter

Hi VMware community,

I'm having troubles trying to configure network connection from my CentOS guest to Windows 7 host Wi-Fi adapter.

I selected NAT for this purpose, but a new adapter won't appear in guest OS after reboot, only localhost. Network adapter is configured to connect on power up.

In host OS I see VMnet1 and VMnet8 connections, both enabled. The VM is created in Workstation 12, also tried in Workstation 15 and Pro.

Any help is appreciated

VIX 1.17 does not work for VMware Workstation Player 15

Hi,

The current standalone VIX version 1.17 that you can download from Download VMware Workspace ONE doesn't work for VMware Workstation Player 15 vmrun.exe fails with ""Unable to connect to host" Error: the specified version was not found", vmrun.exe is version 1.17.0 build-6661328. This version of VIX does not contain a directory named "Workstation-15.0.0" and the correct entries in vixwrapper-config.txt

However VIX 1.17 taken from a Workstation Pro 15 installation works, vmrun.exe is version 1.17.0 build-10134415

Is there any downloadable VIX version that supports Player 15?

Please see the following post for details of how we found out about this problem: https://gns3.com/community/discussion/gns3-doesn-t-work-on-vmware-play

Multiple (virtual) monitors not working at all!

$

Hi!

I'm trying to create a multi monitor test environment on a Windows 10 x64 host system. I've created a Windows 10 x64 guest VM, with all updates and the latest version of VMware Tools. Now I set the monitor number to "2" in the display settings of the VM (the host has just 1 monitor, 3840x2160), boot the machine and go to the display settings of Windows 10. There is only 1 display and when I click "Detect", nothing happens. I've tried reinstalling VMware Tools, changing the number of monitors, limiting the maximum size of each monitor, etc. I've basically tried everything, but the guest system does not detect more than just 1 monitor!

What is the problem??? I can use multiple virtual monitors in VirtualBox without any issues - why does VMware not support multiple monitors??

Regards!

I believe it was a little over a year ago that I upgraded from 12 to 14.   Before that

new versions seemed to come out over the course of several years.   And so

we now have 15 about year later from 14.   And now I have to pay more money.

And I look at the IMPROVEMENTS and wonder why.   And I look at the security

issues with Intel hardware and wonder why.   Am I paying VMWare for the new

version in part because of the Intel security flaws and the cost to fix there mistake?

virtualise windows 7 pro 64 on my own HP z420 workstation

$

Hi!

I wonder what will happen if I virtualise my windows 7 pro 64 on my own HP z420 workstation and try to run it in the cloud/or run on another PC (z620 workstation, other 7I-core PC) - there will be no problems with this? (I have heard that HP workstations have serials built into the motherboards)? the virtual system will not check for the cloud hardware to match the original z420 hardware?

This is a really mission-critical question for me….

Ideally I wish to fully virtualise a windows which has an automated routine constantly being executed – I need to be totally sure that I can do these two things with this virtual image (in case main machine dies):

1)            I can run it on any other PC  in the VMware (it can be another z420, z620 or a simple desktop computer).

2)            I can clone my disk and just swap it to another pc (it can be another z420, z620 or a simple desktop computer).

In light of the above – does it make sense to install a simple Windows 7 (with a key bought online) – add the necessary drivers, run on z420 and then virtualize/clone the Windows to run on any other computer? Instead of virtualising windows 7 pro 64 from the original, native recovery media included with my own HP z420 workstation?

Which Windows 7 version is best suited for a simple cloning/virtualisation? I need this whole automate pipeline to run smoothly on any PC – just stick in the hard drive and run.

Thanks a lot !
