My VMs are always running in background!

I have 2 Windows 7 x64 Virtual Machines, and after upgrading to VMware Workstation Pro 15.0.4, I got this error after opening this 2 Windows 7 machines:

Failed to get exclusive lock on the configuration file. Another VMware process might be running using this configuration file.

After closing this error, I get the "Internal error" and the VM crashes. When I look to my VMware shortcut on my taskbar and It says that 2 VMs are running. When I click to Power Off, Suspend or Pause the VMs, it doesn't change anything. Also, when I open VMware, this VMs aren't running in background.

I opened taskmgr and killed the VMX processes, it didn't work either. I don't know if my other VMs have the same problem (Windows 10, Longhorn, Whistler, Whistler, 98, Neptune, MacOS 10.14 and Android 8), but I don't rescue opening them. If you want to know, here are the symptoms:

Symptoms

*Virtual Machines are always running in the background

*Can't open Virtual Machines

*Don't react to shutdown, pause or suspend

*Can't be killed using taskkill or taskmgr

If you know what's the problem, Please type in comment section to help me or other users.

DirectX 11 support?

Hi

I'm using VMWare Pro 15.0.4.

I'm disappointed that it doesn't support DirectX 11 but only 10 but the game requires 11.

Can you please add DirectX 11 support?

VMware “Unable to connect to the MKS: Login (username/password) incorrect.” after Upgrade

$

On my home's local network, I have a computer that hosts a VM server using VMware Workstation. Sometimes, my dad needs to use a virtual machine, but since his computer is not powerful enough to handle hosting a VM, I set up his computer with VMware Workstation so that he could connect to mine and use it as the host. This worked fine until today when I upgraded both his computer and mine from VMware Workstation 12.5 to VMware Workstation 12.5.1. Now, whenever he attempts to connect to the virtual machine's display after starting it, VMware freezes for several seconds before displaying an error message stating that VMware is, "Unable to connect to the MKS: Login (username/password) incorrect."

Whenever I first set this configuration up, I had this issue, and resolved it by allow incoming traffic on TCP ports 902 and 903 on the hosting machine as was suggested on this webpage. After the upgrade, the exceptions that I added to my firewall seemed to have been removed, so I added them back, and restarted both computers. Even after this, however, the problem is still occurring.

I went as far as doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of VMware on my dad's computer, using Revo to remove leftover files, but even this did not resolve the issue.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? One thing that is worth noting is that I tried using telnet to determine if my dad's computer could "see" ports 902 and 903. The connection to port 902 worked just fine, but an attempt at connecting to 903 failed. This also happened whenever I tried to telnet to ports 902 and 903 on the host machine. I do not know if the issue with port 903 not connecting existed before because when I first set this up, I did not have the need to check the ports with telnet.

Note: I originally posted this on SuperUser but the lack of response combined with the urgency of the situation has made it necessary for me to seek assistance elsewhere.

Mouse stuck in top left corner of VM created from Windows XP Mode VHD on Windows 7 Professional x64

I'm a new vmware user (as far as creating a vm is concerned). I have an old laptop running windows 7 professional x64 that I use for running legacy automobile diagnostic software. I am trying to create a working windows xp vm starting from a windows xp mode vhd. I got the idea to do this from this article, Using Free Windows XP Mode as a VMware Virtual Machine. Unfortunately, it's not nearly as easy as it looks.

First, I found that vmplayer no longer will import a vhd, so I installed VCSC. Of course, VCSC no longer supports vhd. I found this article, How to create a VM from a XP-mode VHD, which worked. In case anyone wants to do this, I found this article, Creating a Workstation virtual machine using existing VMDK virtual disks (2010196), to be helpful.

My latest problem is that the vm will boot, but it's almost unusable because the mouse is stuck in the top left corner of the display. I understand there are some tools that are supposed be installed to improve the mouse, but I can barely do anything on the vm with the mouse stuck. There is nothing wrong with the physical mouse. I have several other vmware vms and they work fine. I searched and did not find a solution to this problem. I'd really appreciate if someone who has solved it would help me out.

I'm using the latest version of vmware workstation.

Thanks in advance.

host and guest cant' communicate

Hello everyone,

I have vmare workstation 15 pro installed. Vmware is installed in windows 10 proff and I have create a linux virtual machine with bridged connection.

The problem is that host and guest cant communicate with each other(ping says request timed out) but each one of them can communicate with othe pc in the network.

If I use NAT instead of bridged, host and guest can communicate, but I need bridged as my virtual machine has to be accessed by all othe pc in the network.

Thanks for the help!

VMWare Workstation 12.5.5 - Quadro RTX 4000 weird graphics glitches

Hello

I recently upgraded GPU from Quadro 4000 (Fermi) to Quadro RTX 4000. Updated drivers and now apps that I used before flawlessly experience weird graphics glitches. Here's example of some games:

susecap732.png

susecap733.png

I'm using "universal" VMs that work under both VMWare and VBox (2 sets of drivers installed) and VBox doesn't suffer from such glitches so GPU damage sounds unlinkely tbh. I tried updating VMWare guest tools but it didn't help. Has anyone experienced such issues with RTX cards? Only some apps are affected. Other apps are affected only partially in some specific places.

VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (svga) NOT_REACHED bora\mks\hostops\DX11\DX11BlendState.c:90

Hello,

I found a bug in VMware Workstation 15 (latest version), my setup is simple:

Windows XP x64 VM with 3d acceleration enabled. I need 3d acceleration because:

Im just running a Game called "Silkroad Online" in this VM.

Wheneve I teleport into a certain ingame town Workstation just crashes the VM ( see below screenshot ).

I tested following:

running same setup on Win 7 x64, Win 10 LTSB x64, running on a dedicated nvidia gpu and an intel graphics card on 2 different PC and Notebook, it always happens in this town.

I can reproduce this error and Im willing to build a VM for an VMware engineer, please get in touch with me.

I can also attach a .dmp, is this safe here in a open place?

I have got no support entitlement!

shared folders are slow

Hello!

I have running windows 7 on Workstation 14 pro on Centos 7.6.

I use it for powerful  CAD (PTC Creo, ANSYS pre and postprocessing)

I know, there are some threads here dealing with this aim (folder sharing),

but I tried some proposed solutions without success, other threads are very old.

Working with mapped network drives runs very fine.

But now, I want to work outside my office without network

For this aim, I synced my shares using rsync to my host system (CentOS).

Then I tried to use them at my guest system windows via ,Folder Sharing'

It works, but very, very slowly. That is no solution for me.

At my windows system, Kaspersky is also running.

I don't want to stop it, because I have no virus scanner at linux,

and so, the windows system should scan my files.

I have seen, that the velocity of ,Folder Sharing' is a very old problem here.

Is there no solution until now?

Greetings,

H.Steffen

installing macOS mojave 10.14 from dmg file on vmware

I'm a beginner in this so I'm not sure why this is happening. I have a macOS mojave 10.14 as dmg file, I'm trying to install it on VMWare workstation 15 so what I did was: 1- I converted the macOS 10.14.1 Mojave.dmg file to ISO using dmg2img. 2- I ran VMWare unlocker to choose Mac OS X system during VM creation. 3- I create new VM on VMWare and choose install operating system later. 4- I chose VM settings -> hardware -> CD/DVD (SATA) -> Use ISO image file and selectd the converted iso file.

VMware cant start the boot correctly and gives efi virtual disk unsuccessful and so on.

I don't what exactly am I doing wrong, I followed this tutorial https://jj09.net/installing-mac-os-x-in-vmware-workstation-on-windows-8/

Autoconnect USB device no longer works in VMWare Workstation 15

The autoconnection of USB devices is no longer working in VMware 15 for me.

In the config file there is a record:

usb.autoConnect.device0 = "path:1/3/0/1 autoclean:1" - Is this setting deprecated in version 15
but in the log file I see
USB: Skiping autoconnect in WS, using askconnect

In the log file from version 14 there was a record that the connection was successful.

Cofig file is the same, no changes.

Can anyone help or try if the autoconnect works  in your case.

Windows Sandbox Feature enables windows defender credential guard feature sets. Does not play well with VMware Workstation

Hello Vmware community;

I have concluded that windows sandbox does not work with VMware workstation in windows 10 build 18329.1.  Enabling windows sandbox also enables windows defender credential guard features which causes the following error when trying to power on a virtual machine in vmware:

"VMware Workstation and Device/Credential Guard are not compatible. VMware Workstation can be run after disabling Device/Credential Guard."

Upon searching you will find Vmware Knowledge Base Article 2146361 which references a link to the following Microsoft KB article:

Manage Windows Defender Credential Guard (Windows 10) | Microsoft Docs

Neither document mentions that the windows sandbox feature enables credential guard features.  Here is how to disable credential guard after uninstalling windows sandbox: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2146361

1. Hit the windows key+s for "Search" and type "windows security settings" and press enter. Navigate to:

Windows Security -->> Device Security -->> Core Isolation -->> Memory Integrity -->> Select Off

2. Hit the windows key+r for "Run" and type "gpedit.msc" and press enter. Navigate to:

Local Computer Policy ->> Computer Configuration ->> Administrative Templates ->> System - Device Guard ->> Turn on Virtualization

Double click that .... and select "Disable" ...

3. Go to Control Panel ->> Uninstall a Program ->> Turn Windows features on or off ->> (uncheck/turn off): Hyper-V & Windows Sandbox.

*Click OK

*Select Do not restart.

4. Type the following cmds in cmd prompt.. to Delete the related EFI variables from the BCD file...

Launch cmd as administrator...

bcdedit /create {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} /d "DebugTool" /application osloader

bcdedit /set {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} path "\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\SecConfig.efi"

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} bootsequence {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215}

bcdedit /set {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} loadoptions DISABLE-LSA-ISO,DISABLE-VBS

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

5. Restart your system ...

This howto has been kinda, sort of covered in various internet searches.  But no one seems to detail clearly how windows sandbox enables windows defender credential guard.  I found this out upgrading to window 10 build 18329.1. I hope this thread is helpful to someone.

Hello Team,

I am using Vmware workstation 15.0.4 and have a couple of hosts on them which I use for testing pusposes.

Due to the applications installed on them I need to have a fixed IP on them along with internet access for the applications to run.

Since I travel a lot, I am ususally connected to different networks and I get different IP addresses on my laptop.

My applicatoions have the below set up on them:

Kindly suggest how I can keep using a fixed IP address and still have access to the internet.

Windows 10 guest using high cpu loads on linux host

$

I have a Windows 10 guest running on a debian host. Running the guest frequently and quickly brings my HOST CPU to 100°C. Usually starting with Windows 10 startup process. CPU load is at 100% for around 5 minutes after loading Windows and chills to 5% if no activity is carried out. Temperature then drops to 60°C to 80°C while constantly cooling with high fan activity, rising and falling to 100°C from time to time (depending on current fan activity) Starting any program like the windows updater brings the machine back to constant 100°C.

While at 100°C, dmesg also shows alerts for all cores:

[ 8770.780647] CPU0: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 60231)

The laptop is 2 Months old and running properly with all multithreaded programs on the bare host system. Temperature without VMs started is around 50°C for high loads and 40°C for idle. It has latest firmware installed and no dmesg errors appear on usage without VM.

I wanted to share this experience and ask for any recommendations for VMWare setup. Could be due to the Kernel from backports or an old Vmware Tools. In this state, VMware Workstation is laggy and barely unusable.

Settings:

The host is a dell precision 5530 laptop having 12 Threads available (i7-8850H). I assigned 1 CPU and 1 Thread in processor settings. The Guest gets 8GB of the available 32GB. The VM is running at 4K directly from an SSD. Graphics Memory is at 2GB, 3D enabled but running on integrated intel graphics.

Software:

VMware® Workstation 15 Pro Version 15.0.4 build-12990004

VMware Tools for Windows Version 10.3.2, build-9925305 (is this latest available?)

Host System

Host OS: Debian GNU/Linux 9.8 (stretch)

Kernel 4.19.0-0.bpo.4-amd64

Workstation 14.X - disappointed with performance, bugs etc

I am a paid user of Workstation and its expense was by far the largest amount paid for software in the last few years.

After about a year of use I cannot say that I am happy with my purchase.

The only reason I use this software is to let me use an Autodesk product in a Windows 7 guest.

Here are my list of observations:

performance is not good: everything is slow

shared folders is even slower, and ultimately fails to retrieve the file I just clicked on with a message the file is no longer found

unity has become unreliable, it just reverts back by itself

sometimes I lose windows 7 taskbar in the guest

a bluetooth mouse kills the guest, makes it totally unusable

the screen flickers dragging it to a different monitor

every update from windows I need to fix credential guard because the guest won't start (you need to fix this Microsoft Gold Partner!)

how many times does one have to install "tools"?

Twice I attempted to post to the forum with real concrete questions, took weeks to get a response from VMware.

I stopped paying for Autodesk updates because there was a never ending stream of paid for new versions, introducing new bugs all the time. At the same time bugs in older versions weren't fixed.

Everytime I get a notice of a new workstation version I am thinking to myself "why don't you fix  what you have?"
